I am a brand new player and heard theme teams metioned at my first tounament last saturday but didin't know what they were or how they worked. Any insights you could give me would be much appreciated

They do a few things:

The give the number of characters on your theme team added to your ititial roll for firsties (If your theme team has 5 characters on it and you roll a 7 you now have a 12).

You can ignore one BFC

You get one (one time) probability control per every three pieces on your team. The piece that uses it must have line of site to the action and gets a token.
