Even "extremely powerful" is a slight mis-statement. Basically, in JLA #76 (or 78, sumpthin like that) it was revealed that he was never returned to our time, after the Obsidian Age deal was over. That meant that he would have been left for dead for over 3000 years, having been dispersed into the ocean as simple particles.
It took Firestorm to help gather the remaining pieces of Plas so that he could reconstitute himself.
In other words, YES, Plas is *essentially* immortal, in that he will not die of old age, or by the sword, or by just about any other means of slaughter. It has not been revealed, however, how he would fair if placed within the proximity of a star: would he melt into absolutely nothing? would he exist as a "free spirit"? who knows?
Either way, he's now permanently persistent.
BTW- it was recently revealed that he can also alter his pigmentation (color) so as to assume any shape AND change color to better resemble the impersonated thing/person/whatever. Tho, this is not a "fine-tuned" ability (he's never really played with it much).
True he's immortal but the real intrigue lies in what has been speculated and said in whispers by other superheroes.
We know that Plas can assume any shape imaginable. What people forget is that when assuming a shape Plas also exhibits the powers of said shape. For instance...
We have all seen Plas pop into the form of a hot air balloon or an automobile. Where, then does he get the propellants for such vehicles? How is it possible for him to operate as said objects? How about the times he's assumed the shape of a rocket to jet across the skyline? Could he "arm" himself if he wanted? Lately (JLA) he's assumed the form of a big, muscular guy when going into combat. When doing so he has super strength.
The fact is that Plas's power goes far beyond stretching. It’s almost on par with Molecule Man. While MM can alter reality around him with but a whim, Plas can alter himself with a whim. The only limiting factor to his power is his own imagination (and a slight case of insanity).
When you start to think of the possibilities (as Batman has) it kinda sends a chill down your spine.

Um, yeah.
So the real question isn't who could defeat Superman, it's who could defeat Plasticman. And here I thought he was a washed up dork with lame glasses...
"Dibney (Elongated Man) doesn't stand a chance...
Not against Him... He could kill us all, for Him it'd be easy... He could kill us all.

.
It'd be easy"
that was a good quote too goldenage. batman and eel obrien go back a long time and batman has made it his personal interest to make sure that plasticman stays on the side of the angels. and its noteworthy that when the new injustice league was ripping up the jla....batman turned to plasticman for help.

Plus, he can change shape at the speed of thought. In the JLA/DC 1,000,000 issue, he turned himself into a constantly-changing room to keep the future (John Fox) Flash occupied.
For comic relief, the guy's a powerhouse.
