A character uses Smoke Cloud or Barrier and is hit or the power is countered. What happens to the tokens?

If they stay, say it was Nightshade that put the tokens down, and she was hit past her Smoke Cloud SP clicks. Would the characters in those squares still take damage?

Whenever a power or combat ability is countered, or lost because it no longer appears in the stat slot on a character, all game effects generated by that power or ability immediately end, but any tokens placed on character cards (or feats) as a result of the countered power or ability remain there.

COUNTER: A game effect that causes another power, ability, or effect to no longer be possessed by a character. Any effects of a countered power, ability, or effect ends immediately.

Smoke Cloud and Barrier definitely get removed. It is currently ambiguous how far you take the "game effect" phrase though. The main sticking point is action tokens from incapacitate. There was a thread not too long ago arguing to death whether or not an action token from incapacitate would be removed if the the character if came from lost incapacitate.

It stemmed from the web tokens introduced with a few of the Web of Spider-Man figures.
