So, anyways, I've been wondering how likely Wizkids would ever be to integrate webcomics into Indyclix. I mean, after all, they ARE comic characters. (Of course, on the other hand, they do lack the street recognition of even c-list Marvel or DC)
To keep things simple, I think we should limit ourselves to webcomics that A. Have a semi-realistic art style (stylized is okay, but good luck putting Order of the Stick into Clix without a massive riot occuring)
B. Focus on what is essentially Superheroics. (So no Goblins, gamer webcomics, etc.)
There's three candidates that really stick in my mind for this:
-PS238: I haven't read all the way through it, but it really seems to be full of some classic, yet fresh, superheroics.
-Walkyverse: Some of the characters from It's Walky! and Shortpacked! seem like they could be pretty solid in Clix. There's also a solid fanbase (targetting toy collectors as an audience will do that for you) who would be pretty sure to buy. Granted, a few characters would probably warrant omissions due to simply being too over the top even for the sometime silly game of clix (Honeybun, the Cheese), but even sticking to the more pedestrian characters, I think they've got a decent group.
-Homestuck: Though the initial art seems a bit too... vintage SNES for conversion to clix, the later stuff (particularly "hussnasty mode" http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Hussnasty_Mode, is downright gorgeous and certainly a viable basis for sculpts) The cast is wildly diverse and colorful, and the majority (12 of them) were actually pretty directly inspired by superheroes, though every one of them has plenty of quirks which ensure they'd bring something fresh to their character archetype. Yet again, there's a huge fanbase who would buy this up in an instant, though probably not as high a percentage as the Walkyverse fans.
The main problem I'm seeing with webcomic clix, at least with two of the properties I mentioned, is that the Kid keyword would be rampant (16 characters in Homestuck, and a goodly percentage of PS238)
Is there any other properties that you could see being a good match for clix?
Ooh, I forgot entirely about Dr. McNinja and Axecop! Shame on me, twice over! Those are two of the biggest names out there, and heaven knows that both would be incredible. Yeah, those are two incredibly solid ideas.
I've yet to read Ratfist, so I'll have to look it up some time.
Can someone explain to me why people keep mentioning webcomics without giving us links? ADVERTISE PEOPLE!
Most of the Superhero webcomics I read died ages ago, but two occur to me as working in Clix form.
Magellan: Follows the life of a girl determined to be the first person to graduate Magellan Academy for Superheroes without any powers.
FreakAngels: Not exactly superheroes, but Warren Ellis writing to the concept "What would happen if the children from Village of the Damned grew up into disaffected 20 year olds." I repeat, Warren Ellis writes it. (Warning: Content not suitable for all ages.)
There are a number of others that could conceivably work. I could see Sluggy Freelance clix (the author used to offer to trade artwork for Clix back in the day, I don't know if he still plays), if the characters were armed with Riff's weaponry, and Aylee or Bun-bun could probably top 100 points on their own.
But, this is deeply wishful thinking. I don't think any webcomic has enough mainstream recognition to really draw people into a set. It's still an extremely niche hobby.
I don't know how folks on the Realms feel about Scott Kurtz's PvP but his Lolbat and Retweet characters would be funny to see as clix. Scratch Fury would be pretty cool, too.
Sidekick Girl, features Valerie Upton, who wanted to be a superhero, but didn't fit the union qualifications for a heroine (namely, looking like a supermodel), so she's stuck being the sidekick to well-meaning, but supremely ditsy Illumina, with her amazing power to... fly four feet off the ground and make flashes. Can Valerie keep her job without being driven insane by her partner? Will she lose her license when it comes out she's dating a henchman? I'd put it about PG-13.
