The 2012 Tournament guide was released today. In it is a discussion on maps. The Rainbow Bridge map is marked as "Not for use in Tournaments" on the map itself.
However, the new guide states...
Quote
1.2.10 Maps: Any WizKids-created HeroClix map is considered official, with the exception of maps from Star Trek: Tactics. Official 36- by 36-inch maps (3 x 3) can be used in any HeroClix event. Official 24- by 36-inch maps (2 x 3) can be used in any HeroClix event when only two players are playing on that map. Maps of other sizes – even those created by WizKids – can’t be used in a HeroClix event. Venues may dictate that maps are restricted to 2 x 3 maps if space issues are a concern. Venues may dictate for an event that only a particular map (or maps) will be used for any or all of a specific round, though this should be announced prior to the event. All WizKids sponsored events will only permit the use of maps that include the color designations for terrain and starting areas.
The Rainbow Bridge is legal to play, the rules on the map are not to be used in tournament play.

It's funny. A friend and I were talking about this just the other day. You can't use the special rules on the rainbow bridge in tournament play, yet Krakoa is perfectly fine (though not allowed last year at Gen Con). Gosh, I wonder which one has a greater impact on play?

Ain't that the truth. The same player at my venue ALWAYS plays Krakoa. ALWAYS. If I leave the map at home, it will magically appear in front of him. So many fun maps out there but the guy cannot play on any other map, apparently.

Don't get me wrong, Krakoa can be a lot of fun, but it can also win/lose the game for you regardless of what your opponent does. Thanks to Krakoa, Apocalypse was able to take down X-Factor while only connecting on 2 attacks the entire game.
Oh, I agree that it's a fun map. In this player's case, familiarity has bred contempt from his opponents. (Thankfully, this week is my venue's IG events so map choice is not an issue!)
