Am I the only one who plays Heroclix and doesn't read comics anymore?
I bought a couple of issues of B.P.R.D. about a week ago but those were the first comics I picked up in what was easily three years. And the reason I did it was to see who Lobster Johnson from Hellboy was becuase I got him in Indyclix.
Anyone else out there play and not actually read comics (at least on a semi-regular basis)?
I'm here with ya. I read comics (mostly the various X-titles) way back in the day and stopped reading about 7 years ago for various reasons. Once HC came out, I went and looked up on what I missed and what is currently going on and, frankly, I wasn't impressed. Though I did recently pick up the Ultimate X-men TPBs and liked what I saw. I'll probably keep getting the UXM TPBs as they come out, but that is probably gonna be it for me.....
I started buying HC about a year ago but I hadn't bought a comic in 5 years. Because of HC I started picking up the titles I used to collect and a couple new ones. In six months I was full time back into comics and have since traded almost all my HC. Huh? Why am I still visiting this site?

I'm in my 20s and haven't read comics in ages. A couple friends of mine got me into this game knowing I was comic fan back in the day and I got hooked.
One of said friends still buys books, and I've started reading some here and there, but I'm not really impressed enough to make me want to start buying them again.
Captain America: C'mere, let me get a closer look at that big gash on your cheek.
Bruce Banner: But I haven't got a gash on my cheek.
I don't read anywhere near as many as I once did, and it's only a handful of regular monthlies. Most of my buys have shifted to trade a hardcover collections, so long as the price is good.
I dropped comics completely for roughly a year between summer of '97 and fall of '98 before making a slow, gradual, careful return to comics. Aside from that break, though, I've been following some characters since about 1968. Thanks to the abusive missteps Marvel made in the 90's and on through recent times I'm not half as interested in the characters as I once was.
I burnt out on all things X-Men during the "hot artist" period in the early 90's, and aside from (very oddly for me) having some interest in the Morrison work on New X-Men that's the way it's stayed. (I won't put a dime towards anything "Ultimate", but that's a stance on principle, not based on the quality of the work.)
Stories these days are not impressive at all. Occasionally they'll throw in something to grab my attention like bringing Dove back to life or bring Alpha Flight into the picture once again. I'll read these just because I missed seeing these characters in action.
I'm not at all happy with the new attitude they're giving these heroes, and how they're trying to give them all real life problems to deal with. I started reading comics to escape real life problems and briefly live in a world with heroes triumphing over villains. These days you read about affairs and spousal abuse and teenage quibbles, and it just bores me. I can just just watch COPS and get as much entertainment.
Fortunately CrossGen comics among some others still believes in telling great fantasy tales of heroes and villains where you can once again let your imagination soar.
I still read comics but lately i only read GI JOE ones. They are pretty good. I read Crisis of Infinate Earths and that was good, but i think i might start reading more marvel comics.
I've been finding kids playing who have never read comics. That is sad (mostly because I know that they aren't reading regular books either).
Anyhow. If you read only one comic title, I would suggest Planetary. It is a tribute to all the genres of this crazy medium over the decades.
For classic heroes still doing their thing, it's got to be Ultimate Spider-Man (the return of real Spidey), Fantastic Four (still getting the job done since 1961), and Birds of Prey (Black Canary, original Batgirl, and Huntress take it to the bad guys).
Not a superhero book, but the absolute best is Ruse. A tribute o Sherlock Holmes. And now thanks to Crossgen's shortsightedness, easy to catch up on.
Hero Clix has gotten me into buying some comics again. I've bought the TPB's for Ultimate Spiderman and X-Men. I may get The Ultimates, too. I also got the Danger Girl TPB, and I like it a lot. I'm buying "Formerly Known as the Justice League" because I liked that team when they did Justice League. I'm also getting JLA/Avengers because I like George Perez, and the story seems pretty good so far. I'm tempted to get a Hellboy TPB to see what that's all about.
I have no intention of picking up a particular title on a regular basis, however.
After not buying a comic since July, I just picked up Hawkeye #1, Ultimate X-Men Vol. 4 & 5, and Daredevil #53 over the last couple weeks. Before I got into Heroclix last September, I wasn't huge into comics. I subscribed to Fantastic Four and Uncanny X-Men for many years, but didn't add any new titles. When I started playing Clix, it rekindled my interest in comics.
I haven't played Clix since August though, and like I said hadn't bought comics since July. It seemed that Heroclix got me interested in comics and vice versa, the two fed off each other.
I'm not getting out of Clix, just not in a place with lots of opportunity to play. But comics are standing on there own. I really hope Hawkeye takes off. He's one of my favorite characters, and hopefully Marvel gives him a chance to shine.
Got addicted in 2002, I've tried to get out, new sculpts keep pulling me back in!
I used to be a huge X-men fan for awhile, 5th grade-9th grade, and Im a senior now, and I have not boughten comics in ages. I like them, but cannot afford them. Im not overly interested, but now and than I read them before Chess and RPG club at school at the library.
I am much more interested in Heroclix for its game play...im a strategist and gamer at heart. I could care less that the game is based on comics, even with my x men background. It doesnt hurt it, but it doesnt sell me the game.
