im kinda a new player to the game. i really wanna play competitively and i show up to my local tourneys twice a week but i feel like i still dont know the proper way to do win or build teams etc. i just stay away from the stuff i dont necessarily understand. basically im just looking for some advice or some tips that can really help me. i have some really good figs but have basically been relying on just using 1 or 2 big dudes to try and win games with. i dont feel like im using much strategy. i dont know if there is a meta in heroclix or how to figure out what the meta is and how to keep up with it or even if the meta matters. just please help a brother out cuz i wanna get better so im not wasting all this money im pouring into this game. thanks a ton
i mean i have a cosmic team right now. which i just found out that cosmic is a generic keyword so idk if i wanna keep it. i have a lot of chaos wars stuff and gg stuff. does a theme team really matter? like can you win consistantly with a non-themed team?
Lately, I've been getting a bunch of people from my wargames group into the game along with players who don't really play competitive games but love comics.
For my WarGamers, I "sold" them on the game thru the Meta tactics of power layering, timing, interactions, using Magic as an example of team building.
For the Comic fan, I showed specific theme teams and then show how to make the work within the teams own Meta gaming.
For me, I build based on roles. Something along the lines of an MMO team structure. Tanker, Range, Melee, De/Buffer, Controller. From there I go into what theme teams can I do this with. If I go with X-Men, you can say
Tanker= Colossus, Juggs, Armor
Range= Cyke, Prof X, Storm
Melee= Logan, Beast, Psylocke
De/Buffer= Emma, Sage, Forge
And then with Controller, I normally place figs that can do different roles at the same time...Prof X can Range and Buffer. Archangel can play Range (short) and Melee (2nd Attacker).
Now keep in mind this also has to play into what is your playstyle. Do you want/need to RushDown? Are you a Close Comabt monster? Do you feel safer at Range? Going with the Magic comparison, are you a Red, Black or Blue deck. Maybe a combo of Red Blue?
When you get that style in your mind, it makes it easier to see what figures play to those plans. If you playing a Ranged X-Men team, you can start with Cyke and add Emma for her Enhancement. She can also be a 2ndary Ranged Attacker. Support these two with Prof X with use of his Outwit and MC. You can then add on Archangel to help Prof X use X's Trait to its utmost. Archangel can also intercept enemies or counter attack based figures.
You want RushDown? Logan, Psylocke (for her TK), Nightcrawler, Cable (you should always have some ranged attack, plus he gets HSS later in his dial).
Part of coming up with this thought process is looking up dials in the units section and looking at the flow of the figures dials along with their SP's. Trust me, it helps.
Now keep in mind these are example teams. I do know and understand that there are better/effective figures that can be used. I went with easy characters to use to illustrate my points of team synergy.
I'm getting tired, lol, I would type more, but I hope this little bit helped. I'll keep checking back in...
wow that was extremely helpful actually. thank you. i have always been more of a ranged player. i just built a random thunderbolts team out of the stuff i have. my group usually plays 600 points so thats what this build is.
3 cw ant man 43 pts each
1 cw taskmaster
3 cw hawkeye
then id use taskmaster and hawkeys wild card to copy shield ability from ant man. then have whole team except one ant man thunderbolt out the mystics team ability, and the last ant man thunderbolt out avengers initiative in case of stealth people. does that sound like a competitive build?
i have 6 cw hawkeyes,, 6 cw baron zemo,, 2 cw taskmaster, 2 cw kang, 1 wos bullseye, 1 hulk tiger shark to work with.
Honestly, I'm a BIG Higlander rule guy myself. With what you have, I'd do...
Zemo
Taskmaster
Kang
Ant Man
Bullseye
And all with the TBolts ATA...
Lead attackers would be Kang and Bullseye as they both deal the most damage. Both would be Ranged Fighters with Bullseye taking a semi Tanker role due to his high Combat Reflexes.
Zeno is our Controller. Being able to Outwit, Leadership and later on ProbCon puts him in a Buffer role while his Psychic Blast and good attack values makes him a solid 2ndary Attacker.
Task should be in "clean up" mode for most of the game. Picking off (cleaning up) the damaged enemies while copying outwits, perplexes, Probs to help support his team. He can still solid Damage too.
AntMan should be hanging onto Zemo or Kang in case they get jumped. Ant Mans best ability is the Exploit Weakness. Even at 1 Damage, sometimes that all you need to knock that Tank/Brick fig off of that great Click, lol. Also, his Trait allows him to be placed after an adjacent characters movement. It doesn't say friendly...just adjacent character. So that ranged guy that has been an issue...just base him and bam. No more shooting! If he moves, then Ant Man goes along with, forcing that Range fig to waste actions on CC attacks.
Also, with the TBolt ATA, normally I take the Ultimates TA. But there are times where XMen comes in good. Mystics is always great. I have even used Serpent Society once, lol.
These are just suggestions based on whatou have. Better teams can be made with this KeyWord...
