First, all you need from the game ZOMBIES!!! is the little plastic zombie dudes pictured below. You’ll need a basic heroclix map, one action token per player, and one HeroClix figure per player. If you want to expand to teams you can, but you should try this first. If you don’t have the game ZOMBIES!!!, you should pick it up. It’s serious fun. But, if you don’t have zombie plastic dues, you can use something else, but you need a lot of them, trust me.
Your HeroClix figures should all be the same point level or same number of life clix. We chose same life clix because zombies deal penetrating damage, even though only one click per zombie. So remember that. I say ‘we’ because you see the helping hands of my nephew and son. We also played one more game later that night with my wife to make sure we knew how rules should go.
No objects were used, you can use them if you want to spice things up, but we didn’t use any.
Placement: Put three zombies per player in the middle of the map or as close to middle as you can figure. All players must place their figures in one starting zone (either end of the map is fine) avoiding only base contact with another player (to avoid breakaway issues). First turn immunity counts in this game.
Zombie stats: Zombies have a movement of 1, attack of 9, and defense of 16. The only thing remotely close to a power is penetrating damage and that may not be outwitted. Zombies only attack if they are adjacent to a figure. Zombies don’t get action tokens for anything. Just hit the zombie and you collect it. Oh yes, one point is to collect zombies. When you kill a zombie you add it to your personal collection. One way to win is to have the most zombies, but last person standing is the winner. By the way, poison does not affect zombies.
Getting started: Roll two six sided dice to see who goes first, just like in a normal HC match.
Action Tokens: You only get an action token if you attack a fellow player or get hit by a zombie. That token clears at the end of your next turn (so yes, under some circumstances you can wind up pushing).
Sequence of events:
-Each player takes their turn to attack a zombie, move their figure, or attack fellow figure.
-At the end of each players turn, three things happen:
1- That player rolls a six sided dice and may move that many zombies one space in any direction (they cannot go through blocking terrain, nor do they have leap climb so they have to use stairs or ladders).
2- After moving that number of zombies, player adds the same number of zombies from outside the game to anywhere on the map (including right next to other players which will not cost an action token).
3-That player rolls an attack for each zombie adjacent to any figure (including their own if they were silly enough to leave them adjacent when they could have moved them *wink*). For each hit, deal one damage to the figure hit and place an action token on that figure (maximum of 1). If a zombie is adjacent to more than one figure roll for even or odd, flip a coin, or something of the sort to decide who the zombie attacks.
NOTE: No figure may have zombies placed around it until it’s had its first turn.
Each player repeats the process until there are no zombies left (because some lucky sap with pulse wave killed them all) or there is just one figure left on the map.
And that’s it! Good powers for this game are pulse wave, quake, and energy explosion. Super senses works on zombie attacks as does combat reflexes. Willpower works when you have a token on you. Multiple attack abilities are nice too. Hindering terrain does give a bonus to zombies versus ranged attacks.
And all other power use against each others figures is legal. Free action powers like outwit, perplex, and probability control won't give you a token, but attacking or attempting to attack will.
Enjoy your game!
