Fact: Liefeld has displayed over the course of his career that he is either unwilling or incapable of rendering the human (sometimes inhuman) body in a convincing way, even in the realm of comic book art.
There is nothing more familiar to the human eye than the human form. The eye will make a human form out of just about anything. And it will let you know when an attempt at a human form is just plain wrong. There is a huge grey area in art when it come to depicting the body, but when it's wrong, it's wrong. Not stylized, not implied, just wrong.
Fact: Liefeld takes shortcuts in his art to cover up his shortcomings in anatomy and composition.
Fact: Liefeld is notorious for having trouble meeting deadlines.
Fact: Liefeld has a history of burning his bridges and coming into conflict with his peers. This thread exists because of the latest example.
Now, my opinion, which I'll own all day, all night. Liefeld is a poor artist, a detriment to the industry despite his success, and anyone working with him or supporting his career by buying his work should have these issues in mind.
His YouTube videos are pretty awesome to. And his interview on Wordballoon about the X-men a great laugh the guy thinks he's Grant Morrison (his words) but he's just that weird cousin who won't take a hint at family get togethers.
Also, I cannot believe that people are objectively defending the dude's art, even as an exercise in being contrary.
Like, I HATE Joe Mad's style. Ditto Humberto Ramos. Like, cannot read a book drawn by them without being totally distracted by the art. That said, I get why people dig it. I get that it isn't my thing, but it still requires a ton of skill to pull off.
Ya see. I like all those guys art. A whole lot infact. Ramos is my favorite of them, but I love me some Rob Liefeld. It's cool you don't like it, but I don't see why people are so passionate about hating him.
