I'm new to the game but as I understand them this how free actions can be used. If a friendly character takes damage at any point during their turn, due to pushing, mystical TA, Ora critical miss, and that character then gains a power that may be used as a free action, I.e. Outwit, sidestep or perplex etc. They may then use that power after actions resolve. Is this correct?

A character may be given any number of free actions in a single turn. The only limit is that said character can't activate the same effect twice using free actions.

Yes.
Actions can only be given on your turn. Move Actions, Ranged Combat Actions, Power Actions, Free Actions, etc.
Also, remember that Free Actions can be given any time, even "at the beginning" or "at the end" of your turn. This is important to know that you can use Outwit to counter an opposing figure's defense power, and then use Poison's free action to deal that character the 1 damage.
Free actions cannot be given in the middle of an action though. Let's say you Flurry a Mystics character, and after taking your Mystics feedback, you end up on Perplex. You cannot use Perplex and then make the second attack. You must resolve the second attack of Flurry, and then if Perplex is showing you may use it.

Right, free actions can only be given in the middle of an action if that action is the effect granting the free action. So Outwit cannot be used in the middle of Flurry, but the free action attack flurry allows can be used with no problem
