So, as the title suggests, I'm looking for competitive team ideas for an upcoming ROC event. The competition will likely be pretty steep as it's one of the biggest tournaments in our state.
That being said, it's a roc event, so as per usual around this time of year, it's 300 point modern, no tactics. Last time I showed up using magneto from avx at 200 with some utility 2tks, a perplex and a prob via enchantress and gf Bruce Wayne). As feared, a lot of people showed up with brother voodoo barda or bro voodoo ghost rider teams, and it's just too easy to chump magneto and make him pretty bad for the points due to combat values dropping pretty quick.
So it's back to the drawing board. Looking at my collection, most of my good figs that I'd base my team off are golden age. The only notable figs I have outside curs that we all know are awesome (scarlet spider, barda, etc) there aren't a ton of figs I'd say are exceptional, besides dark Phoenix. So, I'm hoping to create a team around her and see how it stacks up.
So looking at the fig, her 100 point dial is the best for the points, so I'm immediately drawn to it. I feel like for 200 points you could probably do better than dp, though she's obviously good. The issue is that while she's fantasic, she doesn't pack the punch you would be looking for in a main attacker top dial; her damage is only dinging you through impervious, and it gives you a chance to take nothing. Next turn she should be in prime position to outwit and hit for 3 straight through, and she can get rid of someone's move and attack, turn 1, so hopefully she can stay safe through the next turn.
What would you guys recommend trying out? I've considered running her with avx Emma frost as a tie up, secondary attacker, and really annoying buddy. The problem is that if I'm going for a theme, xmen is very limited when it comes to cheap utility. If I'm not going for theme, I would think something like asm scarlet spider and genaric good support like enchantress, gf Bruce Wayne, scarlet witch, etc would be my best bets.
Things I know are popular at no tactics events include iron pharoh teams, and bro voodoo teams. Right off the bat, I think that unless I'm playing theme and win map roll, this team probably doesn't stand too much chance versus iron pharaoh. You really have to take him to the ocean or hes just gonna sit in a corner with barrier and just win eventually. Versus voodoo teams, it's a toss up. If voodoo gets tk'd into position to get a beast mc to snag Phoenix, you might be in trouble. Also barda takes a lot of your range bonus away from you with boom tube.
These are just my initial thoughts/ideas. Tell me what you think and what you might try instead. Thanks!
Dark Phoenix is terrible and you should mail her to me immediately. Despite her awfulness I will even send you some figures back in return.
Seriously I think your thoughts are mostly spot on. What else do you have to work with? I feel like to make the most of DP you might want figures that share a keyword (whether theme team or not). And I think Brother Voodoo and Iron Pharaoh, along with Shuma, have been making a big showing and you need to prepare for them.
aqhoffman- greatest post possibly ever
jtallday- Jon I wouldn't challenge you if I wasn't sure you are wrong cuz I don't have that kind of energy.
Figures that you make try to see if you have are figures with Battle Fury which don't give a crap about Mindcontrol and Daimon Hellstrom who I believe gives protection for adjacent characters.

I can get my hands on most anything by the time of the tournament as long as it's not ridiculously expensive/rare.
Looking through keywords:
xmen has a few good pieces in modern, but very limited support. Very few reasonably costed low point figs, and support powers are sparse. A friend recently brought up Jean Grey @40 and AvX Cyke @150. 2 TK's and , Xmen TA abuse through Jean, leadership, and the ability to shoot through barrier with cyke. The big problem I see with this is if you DO win map roll versus an annoying team like Pharaoh, everyone's slowed down except phoenix, so you're relying on TK yoyo action.
Diety has a few options, though very few cheap pieces. Amadeus cho brings some more outwit and maybe a prob with the ability to be annoying with 1 damage pings. Monkey king brings some tie up/flight action. You could go balls to the wall and play nightmare, but I'd probably soil myself it someone played AvX switch if I played both.
Cosmic has Rick Jones/Genis Vell, which is good, as he's a great option for a cheap perplex that goes into a cool mini tent-pole on demand (very similar to phoenix but with lack of move and attack. Terrax is OK, as is Korvus. A lot of mini tentpoles from GG. There is some potential to use lilandra for some yoyo action, but there isn't too much else he can do.
a buddy of mine loved using dark phoenix, bm 202 bruce wayne on his tk click, 50pt enchantress, and hobgoblin prime. its a great combo.

I echo this as I said earlier. Is Shuma allowed? He can be taken down as his dial is short, but you need to hit him before he hits you.
Nothing bigger than a peanut base as per roc rules. It's happening the 2nd, so slosh will be out, but I don't know if it will be legal. If so, I'd be tempted to play 250 bizzaro and 50 point enchantress
He's good, but I don't see him being the best by any stretch. What if I play AvX Switch? All of a sudden, you don't have PC and I have all kinds of utility. Plus I can get map roll a lot since I still can play a theme, giving me even more advantage. While Sentroid is obviously good, I think you can still do better in a 300 point no tactics game
Ya but you do that with AvX switch and suddenly she's on a 16 defense willpower click and S/V can one shot that with half of his multiattack from 11 squares away.
Sentry Void is no slouch, but with the nerf to multi-attack last year he isn't as potent as he once was in a no tactics game. That being said the recent change to multi-attack this years helps him out a bit.
As for SLoSH according to normal heroclix tournament rules it wouldn't be legal. However, I have asked the event organizer and it turns out they are allowing it despite only being out for a few days.
It should make for some interesting teams. Hopefully this set doesn't have as many un-clear powers as the Wolverine set did.(If you can even call the set a Wolverine set.)
