If you roll a two ( ) on an attack roll, you automatically miss the target, even if your Attack Total would allow you to hit the target. This is called a critical miss. Immediately deal the attacking character 1 unavoidable damage; this represents a weapon backfire or your character straining or wounding itself during the action. This unavoidable damage is not part of the attack.
If you roll a 12 ( ) on an attack roll, you automatically hit the target, regardless of what you needed to roll to hit. This is called a critical hit. A critical hit increases damage dealt by 1 to each successfully hit target.
So why is the miss unavoidable damage and the hit isn't? If a character only has one damage and has a critical hit, he still can't deal any damage to a character with Impervious or Invulnerability.

Because a critical miss is bad for every character, no matter what. A critical hit is just a boost to damage.

I actually kinda agree with this sentiment....kinda like shooting the arrow at the dragon and finding that one tiny missing piece of armor for it to penetrate....
unfortunately, as another poster has stated....it's in the rules....
I understand those are the rule that's why I referenced them. I just think it's unfair that one you can use defense and the other you can't.

Or, because those are the rules.
Fixed that for you.[/quote]
And you only knock back if you deal damage, which is part of the issue I have with this.
The crit miss damage is unavoidable so it stings regardless of what damage reducer/ignorer the character might have.
Crit hit damage is pretty good even if it's not unavoidable. It adds to damage dealt so it avoids rule of three and can modify locked values etc. And it adds damage to all attacked characters.
I don't care how accurately she attacks, Aunt May can't damage the Juggernaut.
Unless Peter distracts him first.
The critical hit damage doesn't need to be unavoidable because you really shouldn't be attacking a character that you can't damage in the first place. It's just a boost.
Critical miss as has been said is a punishment for a really bad roll. You should not be able to reduce it because your character failed as hard as they could and hurt themselves.

I also see it as the unexpected happening, so your character's defenses aren't up.
