Ranking the Corps/Batteries: Closed Ranks, or Open Enrollment?
There's been a lot of discussion on which Corps/Battery/Emotional Spectrum is the best, but I wanted to open this thread for a specific angle that I hadn't seen brought up yet:
Which Corps are best suited by keeping everything monochromatic, using their own Battery, Ring and Constructs, and which are best suited to be used by other (possibly non-Lantern) characters?
The Sinestro Corps, to me, seems particularly styled to keep ranks closed. Their Emotional Spectrum ability is particularly suited to tentpole builds, and they've got some excellent tentpole candidates, whether it's Superboy Prime, the Weaponer, Mongul, Fatality, or even ol' Sinestro himself. Get that +1 to DV, then use the Emotional Spectrum and the negative Perplex to decrease opposing AV by -3, leading to opposing attack rolls becoming an exercise in futility.
The Blues, by contrast, Hope to include new guys. Everybody loves positive Perplex, and the Blue Emotional Spectrum, while an amazing power, doesn't exactly fit the Blue Corps. They don't have a whole lot of Super Senses, Shape Change or Impervious, instead favoring ES/D, Defend, Barrier and the lighter armor powers.
The Star Sapphires seem pretty content to keep the Love among themselves. Admittedly, they're a very thin roster, so it's expected they'd like to invite others to the love-fest, but most of them start with their Corps power, and as they have a lot of Psy-Blast and Precise Strike, they don't mind that having a Violet Ring-fueled construct on them boosts all stats except damage. Plus, the +1 to AV and DV brings their 10-and-17's to more acceptable 11-and-18's. The Emotional Spectrum is particularly fitting for their ranged-heavy ways, making them one of the rangier teams out there.
The Reds want to bring in fresh blood. Not a lot of Reds begin with their awesome penetrating Poison (4/12 by my count) so by bringing in new recruits they can bring this power to bear earlier in the game. Their Giant Reach Emotional Spectrum power is very suited to them as a melee intensive team, but it's not an absolute definitive aspect.
I think the most powerful mono-chromatic Batteries will be 'Open Enrollment', mostly because the thematic extra powers are more reliable than that on most versions of the characters with the keyword.
Green Lanterns: Giving Willpower is a huge deal, and limiting opposing free actions as well is simply crazy good...plus there is a limited form of protection to Outwit and Perplex. These are all passive effects that don't require much thinking on a player's part. Also, this is the easiest Battery to collect.
Star Sapphires: This is another color with a couple of good passive bonuses...Shape Change and Mystics? The Emotional Spectrum power is also geared towards the eternal meta-play of ranged attacks.
Indigo Tribe: This one addresses the ranged-combat/Outwit/PC sniping part of the meta (for new 'recruits'), plus the ability to do some healing and placement of friendly figures. This is a much more active combination, so I don't see as many players planning to (ab)use it.
Red Lantern Corps: Full dial penetrating Poison, plus Giant Reach is going to be strong. I have a feeling this combination will be exclusively used by non Red Lanterns.
I think the following are mostly 'closed membership':
Sinestro Corps: The Sinestro Corps has many great low-point figures, but the benefit of the Emotional Spectrum is tailor-made for a tentpole...and the SC has several good options. They also have one of the cheapest rings! Honestly I think the monochrome Green Lantern Battery is better for Sinestro Corps forces.
Black Lantern Corps: The extra healing is far from guaranteed, and like the Sinestro Corp above the actual point values of corps(e) members somewhat gets in the way of capitalizing on it...but I think the stats boosts for the Black Lanterns is more useful. I think these guys are better with the monochrome Star Sapphire Lantern.
Sidebar: All of the above is in the absence of Entities. As I see it, an Entity possession of a potential Corps member is an extra-special bonus for aligning with the appropriate Battery.
No one showing any love for the Orange Lantern Corps? Their emotional spectrum is one of the best ways to mess up your opponents team, which is why I expect it to be one of those that gets played in larger tournaments. They don't exactly have a lot of figures with the keyword and the barrier, plasticity the ring gives out would probably be best played on lower cost figures, no one really wants their heavy hitter using barrier. You really want to play this on a team with a few characters to get the most options for the emotional spectrum and due to the lack of options character wise is going to be seen on a lot of none Orange Lantern keyworded figures.
