So i am wanting to read some Wonder Woman. Is the new 52 (uugghh new 52) stuff worth a darn? Where should I start in the new stuff? Current plot any good?
The original new52 team with Azarello and Chiang was really good. The current run with Finch, not so much (it's really, really bad).
For current comics, I also highly recommend the current Sensation Comics and the '77 special. The new Legends of Wonder Woman looks pretty good. I think that comes out soon (if not already).
The original new52 team with Azarello and Chiang was really good.
Agreed. It reminded me in some ways of Simonson Thor, and that's never a bad thing. And Chiang's visual interpretations of the Greek pantheon were very neat. Almost seemed like a Vertigo title in that respect.
Sakurafire and Hail_Eris are correct about the early run of the New 52 WW. The creative team does a great job reinterpreting the Greek pantheon, visually and textually. In the end, the pantheon feels quite a bit like The Endless from "Sandman," and this is a good thing. This take works with the source material, and it provides a lot of depth within which to explore Wonder Woman as a hero and a character. WW comes off as very dangerous but not grim 'n gritty, thank goodness.
I also loved the Azzarello/Chiang run, but I'm not particularly keen on one of the elements that it inserted into the status quo...

Diana as god of war is something that makes me cringe. It was pretty interesting as part of Azzarello's story and in terms of Diana's relationship with Ares, but as part of an ongoing status quo, I hate it. It runs so contrary to Marston's original vision for the character and contrary to what ought to be Wonder Woman's greatest strength - her image as the powerful, noble champion of peace and justice, a heroic inspiration to little girls and young women. I continue to be amazed at how many adult women I know that never got over how much they LOVED the Lynda Carter series. Most of those, I imagine would be off-put knowing that their favorite hero now represents the notion of war. That needs to be dumped so badly.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
I like a lot of things about the Azzarello/Chiang run, but I'm a little on the fence on the changes to her origin. In general I'm not all that excited about the modern interpretation of Wonder Woman as a warrior. I like my superheroes less stabby I guess. It's too dark to read with my daughter, which makes me sad.
Sensational is pretty good. It's an anthology, so you'll find something in there you like.
I hear the new Legend of Wonder Woman is really good, but my shop didn't get their shipment last week.
I agree that the Azz/Chiang run isn't really kid friendly, but it's a cool interpretation of her origin. There are so many WW graphic novels out there that there is something for all ages. I've read so many that I welcomed a bit of a change (because it was done well).
In the case of a large omnibus... I'd be all over that!
Agreed. Still waiting for dummy DC to release an Azz WW Omnibus large hard
I will also add my voice to the chorus praising the Azzarello/Chiang run. This is a very original work in terms of written and visual storytelling. It would be well worth owning in omnibus format.
I grok the irritation from some fans may have about the distancing from what had come before, but this is such a distinctive narrative that there should be no confusion with any other period's interpretation of the character (original Marston, 1970's pant-suit, 1980's Perez).
I just read this article about The Legend of Wonder Woman and it sure makes that series sound pretty good. I think there are only a couple of physical issues out so far, so i don't think I've missed much of it.
