The qualifying replacement character(s) must have either qualifying name and total no more than this character’s point value (unless those characters previously used the Merge ability to be replaced by this character).
Merge
Quote
When this character is adjacent to other friendly characters that each represent one distinct qualifying character listed on a Duo character’s character card and all of them have no action tokens, give this character a free action to replace all of them with that Duo character, the same number of clicks from its star ting line as this character.
Both do specifically refer to qualifying character. I never realized that - I always thought that if the names matched the title (ie: a "Joker" and "Lex Luthor") they could split/merge. That doesn't seem to be the case though.
Curious if this was
A) an intentional design choice for balance considering the plethora of split-merge options either duo would be capable of
B) a total accident on WK's part
or
C) They plan on changing/simplifying the rules for split/merge and we'll be able to use it like JaguarPhD mentioned with the names in the title once this mythical new rulebook hits in 2017
So who wants to bet they are getting rid of split/merge all together? Otherwise you would think someone would have caught that it was missing from both cards.
Origins 2015 Lotr/Hobbit event: First Place
Eternal Games: 2016 Regional Winner. 2016 Super Q Top 16. 2017 Super Q 5th place
I've used split/merge in the past to win a prettyimportant tournament round by healing then re merging but I wouldn't be butthurt if they got rid of the mechanic all together for simplicity.
Those figures preceded the Split/Merge mechanic by about 4 years.
When the Split/Merge-mechanic was introduced a lot of duos were errated to have the qualifying names table in the Player's Guide. The Metal Men duos did not get this errata.

This was because there were no single figures that those duos could Split into, so it was decided to not waste PG space with entries that served no functional purpose.

One of the qualifying names is Thor/Thor Odinson. So you can always Split the 500 point Chariot into a big beastly Thor, if needed. Merging will be pretty tricky, though

Plus, Goats > Robots
Bingo. At least until we get Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder as separate characters. They might be chases in the Pet Avengers set...
My personal favorite is still Larry and Mike though.
