Okay so I was playing with a friend the other day and this question came up. I had two pieces adjacent to one another and then he got one of his pieces up in their face. One of my lanterns had improved targeting and ignored hindering and characters for line of fire purposes. So my question is this. Does that mean I could ignore the character in my face to shoot someone off in the distance or am I still locked down in close combat with the figure in my face. The other part of the question is if I am still locked down is it only sharpshooter that lets me make a range combat attack like that, and if so is it only to the guy in my face?
To add to Bat-Phreak's answer, that means, if it's IT dial outline, you can ignore all characters for line of fire, but doesn't allow you to make ranged attacks while adjacent to an opposing character.

EDIT: sorry, targeting OPPOSING figures only....
In other words, no, IT: Characters will not let your character make ranged combat attacks if it is adjacent to an opposing character.

Sharpshooter is not the only way to make ranged combat attacks if adjacent. Any IT: OO or IT: OO> will allow such a thing.
But Sharpshooter (which uses IT: OO) only allows ranged attacks against the adjacent characters. If you want to shoot out of adjacency, you need the IT: OO>.
Sorry to thread necro this, but I had it come up today.
My character only has "Improved Targeting: -OO-> " and has an opposing character adjacent to him. There is another opposing character a few squares away to which my character has a clear line of fire. I wish to make a ranged attack.
Who are my character's legal options for a ranged attack? If I'm right, he may make a ranged attack against the character who's not adjacent to him, but he may not make one against the adjacent character. Correct?
ALSO, has the official wording for this ability changed since the 2014 printing of the Powers and Abilities Card, which reads, "May make a ranged combat attack against any opposing character within range and line of fire, even if that character is in an adjacent square." The words "even if that character is in an adjacent square" are what's confusing me, here.
It used to be that -OO-> only allowed you to target non-adjacent characters. To target adjacent characters you needed IT:OO. But the wording was changed for the 2014 PaC, I think, so it now allows the character to make Raged Attacks against adjacent characters as well as non-adjacent. That is what the "even if that character is in an adjacent square" is reffering to.

So this is strictly better than simply having "Improved Targeting: OO" as it allows you to make ranged against both the character adjacent AND a character at a distance while you have someone else adjacent? Is that correct?
So with improved targeting I can be sitting next to someone and attack somdone else? Well so long as I have the ignores characters symbol?
No. The Improved Targeting:Ignores Characters. Only ignores characters when drawing the actual LoF. It does not ignore characters for anything else. Including adjacency.
