In a world where Heroclix is hounded by set after set of DC or Marvel characters, let’s take a moment to stop and dwell on the potential of the Indy sets. We’ve seen Yu-Gi-Oh, we’ve seen lord of the Rings. What could be lurking around the next corner? So many sets from the serious to the wacky remain to be explored! In this edition, the spotlight is on The Chronicles of Riddick!
Fair Warning: This article may contain spoilers about the subject it reviews.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, The Chronicles of Riddick is a movie series spanning three full films and an animated short. Set in a far flung future, the series revolves around Richard B. Riddick, an escaped convict and murderer, not exactly you’re typical hero. The entire series focuses on the idea that one evil can combat another. It’s a galaxy filled with convicts, bounty hunting mercs, super max prisons and death worshipping nomadic planet conqueror’s, what could possibly go wrong?
What would the set look like? Maybe something like this . . . Common
001 Merc
002 Necromonger soldier
003 Bioraptor
004 Mud Demon
005 Riddick
006 Johns
007 Imam
008 Carolyn Fry Uncommon
009 Jack
010 Vaako
011 Dame Vaako
012 Boss Johns
013 Toombs Rare
014 Kyra
015 Dahl
016 Lord Marshall
Potential powers and Traits: This set would offer a good mix of abilities with a few trends. There would be some stealthy melee like characters, namely Riddick and Kyra, bearing Stealth(obviously) and things like Charge, Blades/Claws/Fangs or Exploit Weakness. Followed by a slew of ranged characters. However, these ranged characters would differ greatly from each other. The Necromongers, Vaako, Dame Vaako, and the Lord Marshall use some pretty strange weaponry that shoots a kind of plasma or concussive blast, a nice translation into Force Blast and/or Energy Explosion. Then you have the mercs like Toombs, Dahl and both Johns, they use more conventional weapons, guns, so I could see Penetrating/Psychic Blast or as the mercs usually try to take people alive for a bounty, something like Incapacitate wouldn’t be out of place.
Keywords: There are a number of keywords that could appear here Mercs and Necromongers perhaps being the most common. Some more familiar keywords might include Warrior and Ruler

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Riddick
Riddick is one tough guy, having survived multiple attempts to kill him in every movie. One of his greatest assets is his ability for Stealth, aided by what he refers to as a ‘shine job’ on his eyes that allows him to see in the dark. As a click, I could see his vision coming out in an ability to see through opponents Stealth. However this may create a little bit of a problem with his preferred fighting style, knives. So I would like to give him some other abilities aside from just Blades/Claws/Fangs and/or Flurry. Riddick often uses fear to rattle his opponents before fighting directly, so Perplex or Outwit would not be out of place.
Jack/Kyra
To clarify for those who haven’t seen the movies, Jack and Kyra are the same person. In the first film Jack is a small girl who is helped by Riddick but also comes to admire him and see him as a role model. In the second film she returns as ‘Kyra’ and is in many ways a parallel to Riddick himself. It might be interesting to have the younger Jack figure as a support figure with Enhancement/Empower and see the transition to Kyra who operates very similarly to Riddick, but also has a trait that either gives her bonuses him against him or with him, as she struggles to interact with her chosen hero.
Ahhh, such a cute little baby Riddick.
Lord Marshall
The Lord Marshall is the leader of the Necromongers, a nomadic army that conquerors entire planets in the belief that by killing someone they are sent to the ‘Underverse,’ a sort of paradise or heaven. The Lord Marshal bears the unique status as someone who has seen Underverse and returned, this experience made him a holy half-dead, worshiped similarly to a demigod by the Necromongers. He uses a variety of weapons, but is more of a leader so Leadership and Mastermind would appear. However, his true personal power comes from his half dead state. He can maniplulate/drag out other people's souls, though the closest we might see is Exploit Weakness. This ability also allows him to project his soul out of his body before he moves, though his body is then forced to follow moments later. This could easily be translated into Hypersonic Speed, though to make the ability more interesting (albeit more complex) he could work something like ther speedsters that we've seen where he must end in a specific square or instead produce a token that runs around on its own, or a second character like astral Dr. Stranges or orange lanterns.
Bioraptor
Bioraptor is the named assigned to the monsters in the first movie. They are strange batlike creatures that only emerge during a vast solar eclipse on their planet as they are completely vulnerable to sunlight. They emerge in large swarms and locate prey based on movement, not sight. As such I see them as very similar to the brood or the trench that we are familiar with. Charge, Blades/Claws/Fangs and Super Senses all would fit, but like the Trench they are cannibalistic and I would enjoy seeing that in clix, either as a similar ability to Trench where the raptors heal when friendlies die or something otherwise.
Mud Demon
The mud demon are reptilian denizens of a planet that Riddick is stranded on. Their names come from the fact that they cannot be outside of water or moisture for long, hence they dwell in shallow water or mud, they are able to emerge and swarm the land during great rainstorms. Oh, and they’re super poisonous, like deadly. Now, we can hardly require the mud demons to only be played on maps with water, but I would give them a buff in water or Regeneration. For their poison I would give them well, Poison, but also Exploit Weakness to help them out offensively a bit.
Why would Wizkids even attempt this?
Well, Riddick is not a very widely regarded film series. It is quite the definition of a cult classic, and cult classics tend to have very dedicated followings. With a unique mix of characters and abilities they could make a set worth seeing, at the very least as a gravity feed.
Comments? Criticism? Didn’t see the set represented the way you wanted or want to see a set shown in the future? Have interstellar mercenaries hunting you down? Then comment in the accurately named comment section below!
Not an appealing set. You would have to add a couple of more characters from each movie. Also putting the Lord Marshall, as well as Riddick Lord Marshall as Super-Rares.
And while were thinking about it you would have to give anyone with the Necromonger Keyword the trait of "What you kill you keep".
Wizkids rules
When a character with the Necromonger keyword KO's any character on the field he may use ANY power, or trait that the KO'ed character could use.
If you made these adjustments I think it would collectable, as well as fun.
My opinion only
For Riddick, Improved Movement: Hindering would be a requirement. I would give him a special ability that would allow him to reroll or penetrate damage reducers on BCF if he Charged from Stealth. (Maybe even allow him to do full movement from Stealth rather than half.)
Still, this would make for a really cool mini-set. I would collect the hell out of it.
I would definitely buy up a set of that if it came out, but you did leave out the two video games that also flesh out the story (Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena), and can add in a solid chunk of characters and generics to flesh out the set with.
I would definitely collect this set. I think there's room for more figs too; named mercs/prison guards (Anatoli, Santana) and Aereon (Judy Dench's character, if no other reason phasing/teleport) and more creatures. The whip light creatures from the short would be pretty rad, as would the prison armored cats or his jackal-dog.
I think they might try to structure it more like a mid-size Grav feed than a small one just to have multiple versions of Ridddick (because seriously, why wouldn't they do that?), and allow for an often pulled power-common and either a more desirable rare or chase.
Arguendo of the Beige Lanterns (Pedantry Corps)
Feb 2015: JL Trinity War has have given us the CSA, playable and together. Twice. ROCK ON!
REClixed: Justice for Dmitri Pushkin (your sacrifice will not be forgotten)! New generic Rocket Red @50-75 points while we're at it? Still no 19DV Defender? (WoS Groot doesn't count)
Power Girl AND Bust.
Love the ideas and the set would have a lot of characters to help flush it out. This would be a great opportunity for an expanded riiddick universe to be flushed out in.
fun choice. I can definitely see getting some generics and a few warriors and soldiers out of it.
know what might be fun? Ghostbusters. a bunch of ranged scientists with the capture ability and several monster-like ghosts. maybe a Gozer and Vigo the Carpathian with power cosmic. colossal Stay-Puff is a no-brainer.
