Hey everyone, and welcome to another edition of Causing a Scene-ario!
Suicide Squad is going strong at the theaters (at least as I write this), and I'm betting venues will be trying out some kind of Suicide Squad scenario. I went through a few iterations of this.
At first I thought about requiring Amanda Waller, and all villains. Not bad, pretty broad, but what if someone doesn't have Amanda Waller? In two months when "Joker's Wild" releases this might be easier... but that's not now. If there had at least been a version of Rick Flagg, but again, I'm betting "Joker's Wild" will see him (if not then, we're never getting him!)
I thought about just all villains, but I thought that was too broad, too easy. Also up for interpretation in cases, so I nixed that idea. I decided to break my personal rules be fairly specific and require a figure to represent each of the main characters in the movie. I made Waller optional, and said that no one on the team but Waller could have the Suicide Squad TA or Keyword.
The lineup I went with was Rick Flagg, Deadshot, Katana, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Slipknot, Captain Boomerang and Diablo. Looking back I forgot Enchantress... oops. I actually wish I had done this AFTER seeing the movie, to get a better idea of what the movie was going to include, if any died that I could make optional... could have changed things some. So with that roster, here is what I decided would be the requirements to represent each character:
Quote
Amanda Waller (optional)
Soldier type with Leadership
Female Martial Artist keyword w/ BCF
Range > 5 w/ RCE
Female w/ Combat Reflexes
Animal keyword
Plasticity first click
Range <6 w Running Shot
Energy Explosion w/ at least 2 targets
Not too hard, but more specific than I normally do. I did 600 points, but after hearing about my players' frustrations building the teams, I would say 700 might have been better. 600 gives you an average 75 points per character. Not impossible, but not easy either. 700 ups that to 87-88. Below you can see a few examples of the different Suicide Squads my players came up with. What would you have played?
Definitely not a scenario that you can just show up day of and whip a team up. You have to pre-build! You could cover 2 of the figs in under 25 points if you use Black Cat (World's Finest) and Spider-Bot (Mark 2) (Deadpool). Cheapest iterations of those two. I also guess I wasn't totally clear on "Rick Flagg". My players read that he had to have the Soldier keyword... sorry for the confusion on that one.
So the final scenario ended up being:
Y'all jokers must be crazy!
One thing to remember if you're going to do a scenario like this, it's just begging to have someone miss some part and not have a complete team. It happened to me with two players. One didn't read the entire requirements, and built a 3 figure team. The other was missing one figure, due to his friend's slip up (the group shares a collection). Problem with this scenario is, if you don't pre-build, you'll have a hard time fixing it to be "In Build". Maybe a new player shows up, they also might not be ready. So what do you do? Let them play with what they can scrape together, risk other players being angry that this person got to use whatever while they were held to a specific build? What about prizing? Do you omit them from prizing, and if you do, how do you handle their games? Auto loss? Not entirely fair to other players who didn't play that player (free win...). If you give their opponent the win, how many points? If you give 0 points, then that could hamper their overall standings. What if the "Out of Build" player wins a round? Or the Tournament? Things to consider.
Anyway, next time, we'll see what the Spider-Verse brought to The Clix World, and a report on some of the Amalgams players came up with as I run the scenario from last Edition! Until then, get out there and Cause a Scene-ario!

Using this for our venue next week. Made a few modifications (took out the need for a character to be female. since none of the male character had that requirement, felt unnecessary). Changed animal or dolphin keyword w/ b/c/f for Croc, wildcard w/ CR for Harley, Plasticity or L/C for Slipknot and added Phasing/Teleport w/ mystical keyword (optional) for Enchantress.
This scenario kind of reminds me of a scenario I ran once, but I based it on the Big Seven of the Justice League:
1. A character with Leadership (Superman... or Wonder Woman or Aquaman)
2. A character with Outwit. (Batman)
3. A character with charge and super strength (Wonder Woman... or Superman or Aquaman)
4. A character with HSS (Flash).
5. A character with Running Shot and a range of 8+ (Green Lantern)
6. Anybody (the third of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman)
7. Anybody (Martian Manhunter)
I forgot how many points this was, maybe 700 to 1000 points, I don't recall. I remember checking first that I could make a variety of teams: JLA, LSH, X-men, Avengers, etc.
I do think that's one problem a lot of judges making specific scenarios often forgot to watch out for: "Can I make a bunch of different teams?". I remember one scenario a judge made once (well, I don't actually remember the scenario) in which it was only possible to make two theme teams: Justice League or Detective. I brought both teams. Another player brought the JLA team, so I played the Detective team.

Exactly! You've got to make sure there is some variety. Otherwise, players just won't show up.
There's been times when I've seen what a scenario was, and decided that I didn't like what few pieces I was sure to have to play and I didn't go...
