When an ancient cult threatens to release powerful deities into the world, it falls on not one, but two super teams to work together and stop it! In this special edition of Comic Accurate, we spotlight the X-Force annual guest-starring The Champions!
In 2010, I was given the opportunity to take over this article series from Dr. Morbius and lancelot. It was a different time for Heroclix back then. It was a simpler time. No pink powers, no resources and no ID cards. It was an honor to get to spotlight teams based off of comics over building teams around a meta dynamic.
My first article was focused on The Champions. Four years later when I was celebrating my hundredth issue of Comic Accurate, I revisited The Champions. With my 200th issue? I thought about spotlighting the classic roster again, but the figures haven't changed that much. I then thought about doing something with the current incarnation of The Champions, but as Viv Vision is still unmade, it wouldn't have felt right.
But then when looking into Champions stuff, I found a 1998 X-Force annual where the team reunites and teams up with X-Force. Perfect for a thousand point celebration team!
Why these figures - Mainly these characters were selected based on points, as opposed to recent iterations. With a few exceptions anyways. Iceman and Black Widow were picked because I liked those versions best. Angel was selected because it looks dead on like his version in the comics at that point, and Johnny Blaze wasn't Ghost Rider anymore back then.
Tips for running this team - It's gonna be a tricky situation for this team. You don't have a theme unless you house rule. You only have two people with a range higher than six. And you only have one person with Probability Control and one with Perplex. No Outwit is a tough deal. This is the kind of team where you're likely only in a good situation if you're facing a team not too dissimilar. If you're dealing with a small number of crazy high point pieces, a stealth team or a hypersonic team... you're in trouble. You may have to bum rush your opponents, hope you don't take too many hits before you can really hammer the enemy.
Let us know how the X-Force/Champions team up did for you! Next week, it's my 100th edition of Unclixed! Then in two weeks, it's another edition of Comic Accurate!
I'm actually planning on playing a classic Champions line-up for a Modern Age Comic Accurate event I have coming up in a few weeks. There's a pretty nice 300pt. team in Modern right now, at least if you don't mind fudging it a bit for Ghost Rider.
