Perhaps if you just run one specific team. But there's breaking theme, and then there's complete lack of attention to any sort of comic book knowledge at all. Entities can show up in the DC universe, sure. But Bullseye? I think that taking a supremely good figure and slapping an Entity on it is showing a bigger lack of creativity than figuring out a good team that's also comic accurate.
Wasting your time. Your trying to make a point to the master builder who knows all about life and clix, you can tell by his winning hat.
But that's the joy of this. These are our opinions. I play this game for characters I love, and you sound like you play for strategy that YOU love. And that's okay.
I've never agreed with anything more on the realms.
If you want to play "comic accurate" teams, that's fine. But the idea that comic accurate=creative has never made sense to me. It's netdecking based on character name rather than stats. Having your team decided by a comic you read is not any more creative than having it decided by power level.
Good point, here. I'd never call comic-accurate "creative".
It's totally my bag, and I'm all behind it, but creative; it ain't.
I wouldn't call it netdecking, unless you read your comics online, though, but I see your point.
I don't get the whole, "I'm better because I'm more creative" thing, either. There are plenty of laudable character attributes aside from creativity and I wouldn't put creativity at the top.
They are playing StatistiClix, not HeroClix, but they are playing Clix none the less.
And again I say to you, "StatistiClix" is a subset of HeroClix. It's not not Heroclix.

Yep. I think playing "comic accurate" teams can have value, but that it's disingenuous to call that creative.

Well, that might even be THE problem : tactics are too good to pass when you play competitive game. Which is why I just don't anymore, because this has nothing to do with the game I've played and loved since its beginning, and that until the first glitches with Vehicles, then the Gauntlet, had been getting better and better.
Now this game has gone to hell. A few characters like Fantomex, Voodoo, WoS NC, Pharaoh, Centurion etc. have broken the basic premises of the game, and the tactics have definitely broken it all, to the point where EVERYONE in competitive events plays either a Ressource or a Team Base, and now Entities on top of it all.
And at the same time, WK has issued so many expansions that you need truckloads of money to get it all (not to mention a warehouse for stockage). You buy a fig, barely can play it, and the same character comes out with stronger stats.
And if you're playing competitive, you HAVE to buy a lot, because you'll need those Chase, those Ressources, and those Entities.
So, to sum up my little rant :
- This isn't the way I like to play this game, and I know I'm not alone in this (and neither are you) ; here, outside of national events, the tactics are forbidden in every tournie, because nobody really enjoys playing like this.
- As long as they issue new #### like this and the current one hasn't gone out of Modern, this will be the way the game goes, and I won't go to such a tournament scene.
- Yeah, it's pretty unimaginative to take a few figs and slap a Relic + Entities on top. Makes me vomit in my mouth. Still, I can't blame the players who do, because they know it's the only way for them to win easily (meaning there are other solutions but they're much harder to pull).
In this we're now very close to the worst that Magic ever had to offer. Yippie-yeah !!
Competitive clixing has never been "fun" in the sense that you've always had the right to mix universes, teams, and worse, to put several times the same fig in your team. But at least it was still heroes battling, not the battle of "how can I push a fig overboard by putting extra stuff on it". Even the Protected / Nova Blast era of Feats has never be that bad.
Here's hoping that things will get better. In the meantime, those who enjoy winning will keep playing like this, and those of us who enjoy THE GAME will play scenarios in smaller tournies or at home.
Maybe, seeing the point we have reached, the best would be a Silver Age format which would be like Modern but without tactics / entities and which would be played in official tournaments ?

WARNING: Haven is about to commit HCRealms blunder number one, and compare Clix to athletics, sports, or a real game that has real rules, balance, etc.
Is Kickball a subset of baseball or is it another game entirely?
On a weekly basis, The Girl asks me if I'm "going to play Clix" on Fridays. I don't correct her and say, "I'm going to play HEROClix!"
Perhaps I should be making that distinction.
Is MageKnight Clix?
Is MechWarrior Clix?
(Oooo, here's the kicker.)
Is HorrorClix Clix?
None of those are a subset of HeroClix. Why would "Clix" be a subset of HeroClix? It should be the other way around. Anything with a clickable base should be Clix, and then it should get more specific from there.
But the basic premise of my original, and continuing, point still stands.
(For those of you who have not seen/heard this whole thing before
"HeroClix is a game with characters from comic books and video games.
If you build your teams based on those criteria, you're playing HeroClix.
Even if you're not following a strict comic or video game based theme for your team, if you're interested in characters, colors, names, personalities; then you're playing HeroClix.
I've met players who bring a team, tell me that they have a theme, and challenge me to figure out that theme. Sometimes it's something like Scooby Doo. Then they'll show me who is Shaggy, Velma, Fred, etc. on their team.
They are playing GoofballClix and I'm fine with that too. They're putting their teams together based on characters and some sort of twisted theme.
But it's when you disregard all of that and look only at the statistics of the figures that you start to play StatisticClix"
Granted, the fault for all of this falls squarely on the shoulders of Wizkids, and always has. As far back as Firelord, they could have been making a game that was balanced and was geared toward, and rewarded, thematic play based on the characters and properties on which the game is based and in over a decade they have yet to do so.
They know full well that morons like me will continue to buy their lousy game because of the characters and properties associated with it. It's damn ironic when you think about it.
Instead of honoring the properties and characters on which the name HeroClix is based, they continue to focus on competitive play where all that is disregarded. They continue to release game elements that make the game little less than Magic in 3D, and the horror continues.

Interestingly, one of the big reasons I started playing Clix in the first place was the ability to cross universes.
I grew up with Megos. Before Clix, it was the last time that Marvel and DC played nicely together in the same figure line.
DC Trinity with Thor instead of Diana?
JSA with Thor instead of Billy?
Spider-man and Batman working together? (Wizkids should have never given me those promo figs together.)
This sounds like all manner of fun to me. Yes, I recognize that making this kind of thing happen would take a careful balance and Wizkids is, apparently, not even capable of the semblance of balance, but it's how the game should('ve) work(ed) as far as I'm concerned.

I'd agree with both of these sets of distinctions.
Also, I do read most of my comics online, so I guess my comic accurate teams are net-decked.

Huh, look'it that. HorrorClix is back.
Well said and put by Haven, shocker!
I play because I like Comics and the Characters (movies/game titles included) foremost, not because I enjoy Table Top Gaming.
I don't fault those who play MinMax / Meta Teams, I just avoid them by not joining Tournaments because the game has expanded so much so that you'll inevitably find them there.
I'm playing in San Antonio next weekend to see Chrisdosmil, PredatorSmurf and my old crew (before I moved back to Austin) since I haven't seen them in years. I totally expect to get completely smeared by some quadruple stacked Entity + Power Plant Team but again, I wouldn't attend otherwise if it wasn't to see friends and I don't need an LE Con Exclusive Prize Plastic Miniature that bad ...
