Been running $20 2 booster sealed events since... God I can't remember... 2007 avengers/justice league/mutations and monsters...
I guess it won't be around long lol...
They even had double prize support for most of the slop events they have run.... sometimes there is 10, this last time there were 6. That is how I walked away after choosing 5 from the snake draft.
Well, for those old set's, $20 was fine. Prices have gone up a bit since then. And given that I've seen the costs on this CWSLOP stuff, I can tell you that at $10 a booster, your store probably lost money. Maybe they broke even, if they didn't get stuck with any leftover boosters.
If your store can afford to do that, and the owner is actually aware and is cool with it, great. Not every store needs to turn a profit on Clix events to stay open. I just hope its not a case of someone taking advantage of a store owners trust and screwing them out of money.

$20 for two boosters 9 years ago was the MSRP. Since then, the MSRP for regular packs has gone up to $13. If they're still charging that price, well, they're making money over the cost of the product, but not much. Charging that much for Civil War, where the price per case was the same but there were four less packs to sell per case (hence the higher MSRP of $16), they lost money on the events.

That's where it gets a little tricky...
The "Case" of CS contained sixteen boosters and two Prize Kits as one purchase, instead of splitting it into two SKU.
Previously, most Venues covered the cost of the Prize Kits instead of passing them along to players. Indeed, many players held a low opinion of Venues which tried to pass the costs along like that.
The MSRP for Civil War, on the other hand, passes that cost along to players. It's set as if the Venue pays for the boosters and gets the two Kits for free.
Would never play that venue again. Judges for the most part don't actually do anything, if anything all they deserve is a pat on the back
It's always nice when someone makes a stupid comment. I like reading the replies.

And that was done, I believe for two reasons. Concerns were raised in the past about venues paying for OP kits and eating the cost* and secondly, taking packs out made the set work better for battle royales anyway. This was a good attempt by WK to alleviate concerns about the cost of OP kits.
*Yes, yes, it's a promotional cost, but it's still a concern that's been raised. Fear Itself included the OP kits with the cases, albeit in a different form and charged venues more per case IIRC, which is why some stores charged more for that one.

I fail to see the contradiction, but let me clarify my position a bit more:
If a judge has a specified agreement that he will be compensated via LE's or whatever, whether written or oratory, then NO. That judge is not a volunteer.
Now, if a judge doesn't have the above agreement, but the venue still gives LE's//prizes/whatever sometimes, I would be inclined to think he is volunteering, because he/she knows there is no official agreement about compensation.
To me, here's the ultimate test, judges: If tomorrow your venue declared to you that they would NOT be awarding you ever again an LE or prize figure for your judging/time, for some reason or another, would you STILL show up to judge, even though you know you wouldn't be compensated?
If your answer is YES, then to me, that judge is a volunteer at heart. It also shows he/she has a strong sense of character, and has the good of the venue at heart, IMO. If the answer is NO, well, I'd be inclined to think that you felt you were entit--...Oh wait...
*Looks off stage and whispers: "That word is politically incorrect around here, isn't it...? Ok, what about "Deserved"...? No...Hmm...Gotta help me out here...How about "Privileged"...?" "Qualified?"*
I think you see my point. With that, I'll bow out, since I've said my piece, and it seems like I'll be tarred and feathered If I keep banging this drum. My apologies if I've offended anyone here, unless it's my opinions that offended you, in which case...Well, I can't honestly apologize for that. Everyone's got an opinion.
(Pleasure sparring with you though. I'm sure we'll meet again soon...)
Whatever the judge is given for compensation, he is NOT getting paid and is still a volunteer, unless he's getting cash or debit cards that can be used to buy fuel for the car, tires, food, pay rent, or cover any real expenses, etc, then it's not at all the same as being given an LE or a 10% discount at the local comic shop. Seriously, he's still a volunteer, and in fact from the real perspective I just gave, he is in fact paying to be the volunteer, especially when he has to make a long drive completely out of his way to be there to judge. Even when no one shows up for the event. Again, an LE figure or a 10% discount is appreciated, but it is in no way getting paid to do what I (and other judges) do.
I guarantee you that I pay more just in fuel costs every single time I go to the shop, than I'd be paying if I bought the weekly 2 dollar LE figure I get. I don't buy comics, and only occasionally buy a single figure, typically $5 to $10 worth, so saving a few dimes on those is not getting paid to judge. I'm not complaining at all, just giving a real perspective.
I'm against this. I'm fine with judges getting an LE or copy of the grand prize when they aren't able to play themselves, or when copies are provided for that purpose. It always rubs me the wrong way when the judge takes the first pick of prizes or something like you mentioned (though thankfully that's not the case). I get it's a volunteer position but I know that other people would be willing to step in and run events if it came down to it.
I disagree. You might think it's as easy as just asking someone to take over the position, but from experience, I can tell you that it's not. Most players actively do not want to be the judge. And that goes for the majority of veteran players, who are the ones you'd want. I've been told more than once when I've asked, that they prefer to play not set up and run the events. It's also a commitment, week after week, not just a matter of being a rules referee.
