Cowboy hat is authentic black leather in the colder seasons and woven straw in the summer. Bears no Mechwarrior logos, and the hatband on the leather blew, so I took it off.
@Elite: he must have only had an imitation cowboy hat. Only explanation for why he didn't sweep the event. Imitation cowboy hats just don't have the same battle power as real cowboy hats. It's a proven fact.

I think it helps if you're from the SW of the US too, Texas in particular. :)
right so if i walk into a Texan gamestore at an MW event wearing my ungenuinine BLACK cowboy hat I have no chance at all ?
And if said Texan White wearing Cowboy meister shows up at said place he(or she) would always win ?
some one willing to sponser me to test it out :-p
I think he (or she, doubt those off that particulair gender read this but still...) would stop playing MW and switch to something like poker real fast.......
UK nats soon they are playing AoD onward faction pure.
Crazy Lim... oops sorry Richard crazy Brits....
Rumor has it there will even be a Dutch Nationals soon. Ill hope i make an appearence there seeing what everyone plays in my neck of the woods.
Regards
E130 the vereable one (to many kids at my venue i feel like well not young still a kid though)
Does the rest of the world really still play Restricted?
I remember when WK announced that tournament play would no longer be Restricted. Everybody in my area (RI) and everybody back where I grew up (OR) thought it was a great idea. I would imagine the meta would be quite different if you didn't have access to all that cool pre-AoD stuff.
Most armies I field and face these days contain at least one or two pre-AoD vehicles and infantry. To me this helps store owners order MW since if they overorder a little they can still sell the stuff even years down the line since it never retires. Since the best 'Mechs in the game are consistently being updated there is always a reason to buy the new stuff, but some old stuff (hoverbikes, J-37s etc.) has never become obsolete.
I guess my question to the rest of Earth is, why? Why play restricted? Heck, the last restriction was supposed to retire AN from tournament play. Why allow AOD, FiP, and AN but disallow the other sets?
You should put the question with WK or those that organize for Wizkids. Because main the reason is why we play AoD restricted is because the Europeans where restricted it is the same with our Nationals. So we prepare for the mayor tournements and take that at our venue as the standard to play.
Also for later coming players that Merc Zahn is priceless piece to come by or that DF donar. While apperantly AoD + is easier to come by.
Your ask your question to the wrong people I guess.
Doesnt matter to me personally if it is AoD+ or unrestricted ill play it all :-p.

No the ROW does not play restricted. :p
in reply to your other question, my PPOV.
generally speaking the UK & Ireland player base prefers sticking to the spirit of MW; you play your chosen House, Faction or Mercs.
Restricted sets a standard for all without question.
newer players can access most post-AoD figures at reasonable prices.
none of the pre-AoD pieces that effectively mullered the UK player base.
as mentioned this is my PPOV and other UK players may differ. FWIW 3 years ago the UK format was widely praised by the ROW as the best due to the same basic constraints.
So let me ask you this: the ROW does not currently restrict anything, correct?
So when we are talking about "the current meta" do we mean the European meta, or the US meta? If I can use my SW-j37s and you cannot then there can be little doubt that we are not playing in the same meta, hence it may well not translate.
Also whither are the Liao players supposed to go in Restricted? Virtually none of their post-FP infantry & vehicles are playable.
So, fellow meta-heads. What do we think of the Champions Pack 1 'Mechs/pilots/gear, now that they've officially released and we've all gotten a chance to get our grubby mitts on them? Going to leave aside the possible 10" melee range on the Mortis for now, since if that actually works like some people say it might, it'd turn this game upside down...
Anyways. Scrub is obviously going to be a major piece in the metagame given what all it can block, but with typical Improved Targeting gear in a 600-point match, it'd cost 196 points. That's a good deal of pointage for a light 'Mech, even one as statistically superior as Scrub. Also, its ability is wasted points against armies without Jack/Streaks/SC-DF SA, which can sometimes suck. It is a very powerful piece though, quite quick and with excellent stats/SE that actually hold for a click, unlike a certain Solitaire. As well, it's fully repairable if you happen to have a repair unit in your army, and with limited life, if it survives a hit at all you have a good chance of repairing it back to full if you can peel it out of battle.
But really...Scrub will, single-handedly, screw over the otherwise extremely powerful Hammerfall + SU Streaks/RepairMech and Jack-based armies, as well as hurting normal Streakers like Slayer and Chikako pretty bad. For that alone, I find it eminently playable. The fact that the unit itself rules isanother layer of cake on the cake. Me personally, I'd run it with Decoy, make it a total pain in the rear to hit so as to further screw over the Streak monkies.
The other big piece for me is Overlord. That dude screams PC abuse. I fully intend to see how well he works with a PC hand specifically designed to make my opponent miserable. Run with Dust Storm, Horrible Day, and whatever else one wants to do to screw with people. I'd probably go with Heavy Fog myself. Overlord has a 2 in 3 chance of nixing them on my own turn, lets me abuse my own ranges/avoid critical misses/nix enemy defense boosts. Unsure (probably not, here), but it could even serve as a Perfect Day counter, get you back the PC you lost to it. Lots of abuse potential, and once again the 'Mech itself is a nice piece. the pilot ability name definitely fits the 'Mech - Overlord is a tactician's piece, not a brawler's piece. As well, the Guardian Retrofit card fits nicely into the assault 'Mech niche of unstoppable monster machine, even if it costs a bloody fortune, and it works great to ensure that Overlord wins any Streak duels it ends up fighting. I'll be playing it at least once
Lolcat and The Messenger are both good 'Mechs as well, but I don't think they'll have a huge impact on the metagame, short the Mortis' Incredible Extend-O-Scythe thing if it's for real. Lolcat's solid but not standout, and seems a bit slow for a medium, though his pilot's 2/2/1 'slinger will be seeing a lot of play. And while The Messenger is an excellent 'Mech and a good melee choice, there are more effective choices both in range and accuracy. Though I don't think anything else, including 'Mechs equipped with its own Melee Retrofit gear, can match it for damage output.
So let me ask you this: the ROW does not currently restrict anything, correct?

Cloudmoon,
no, the ROW does play restricted in certain circumstances. last year World MechWarrior Championships were restricted to AoD +
the European and US meta are the same.
if i give you the impression that i, a RotS player, cares if a Cappy goes anywhere except to #### then i apologise!
seriously, this is not a question for the players as much as a question for the UK National organisers. ;)
have you joined the Dark Republic to fight for The Republic yet?
I think in the US the players tend to go for high defense and in Europe for higher attacks as a general trend.
You cannot compare unrestricted and restricted it evolves in different usefull armies.
I find BR as a faction way more deadly then in restricted. There are many different flavours going from venue to venue as well. So I disagree with the right honorable Rearly that the meta is the same in both the Us as Europe.
First compare like with like so take the format.
Second it differs i bet ranging from Los Angelos towards New York with different flavours being succesfull in different locations. I be someone is beating everyone with some assault at the next venue with 4 lights etc etc.
The metagame can also depend just as much on attitude and personal preferences as sheer tactics and logicality, at least on a more local basis. I myself prefer light 'Mechs with a heavy bite and lots of speed, and because I know how to work them, other people were forced to adjust their tactics at my local venue to deal with such fights, even though those sorts of tactics don't apparently work in a Worlds-level game. I don't like focusing all my fighting pointage into a single high-yield heavy or assault machine, especially one too slow to catch more agile foes.
Making a sweeping generalization that the metagame is the same across the face of the Earth is silly. The very definition of the meta contradicts that, since the meta is based around anticipating and outfoxing your foes on a personal, tactical level. If I played a heavily anti-Streak army at my local venue, with Scrub and/or EC and stuff, and blew points on true grit to protect my typical heavy defenses, I'd be largely wasting my points. Guys around here don't use Mercpride, or prides at all, and most of the time there's little to nothing of the sort of blocking nullifiers so prevalent in high-level tournaments. But if I went to a regional or national tournament, both Scrub and True Grit would be the first things in my army, because at those tournaments I can easily expect such tactics to be dominant. I'd also have to worry about the infantry threats I never really have to deal with at my place, but I'd also have a lot less worry about slamming face-first into an Atlas, Marauder, or Malice every freakin' round I play.
Rearly, congratulations on being the British MW Champion.
(bows) many thanks Elite130. i am writing up my individual battle reports in my journal. special kudos must go to Cloudmoon for his championing the Minigun Cycles. i took his advice playtesting them vs the Scout ATVs and arrived at a similar conclusion - they rock!!
