Saw Shame last night. Fassbender plays a sex addict. The movie was very well shot. But it was a major downer and showed way too much of Magneto's dong.
Catering to the lowest common denominator since Feb 2003.
It just didn't appeal to me at all. Few of the characters were well developed other than Parks and Goodman's.
I'm real picky on my thrillers though, and senseless killing is one of those things that really turns me off on a movie.
I'm sure there are plenty of people this appeals to, but my friend who lent it to me and I agreed that it wasn't for us.
If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. There's nothing wrong with that. Red State is definitely not for everyone.
If you found all of the deaths to be senseless however, you completely missed the point of the film. There were very specific reasons for all of the deaths on all of the various sides. The film is about belief, and how dangerously misguided it often becomes. Belief in God. Belief in the Government.
Oh I got what it was about. There's even the whole spiel at the end trying to sum it up. Doesn't change a poor movie experience into a good one though. The "Just Following Orders" thing is handled better in plenty of war movies, and the fanaticism of the Five Pointers, just didn't come off as particularly believable on screen, despite the fact that it's probably pretty accurately researched as quite plausable. But them kidnapping the three teens after luring them into their awkward sex trap was just a huge disconnect for me.
Very well shot though. Especially the Angarano chase scene.
Just got through watching Space Battleship Yamato! I found it on Amazon last week, and it was waiting for me at my mailbox when I got home from work. I'd been dying to see this flick since I saw the first teaser trailer back in January 2010. For that matter, I suppose I've really been waiting for it since I first watched Starblazers in 1979.
As I expected, the movie did turn out to be a bootleg. It is a very high quality bootleg, though. The picture quality is excellent, as is the sound. The subtitles are less than perfect, which is pretty much par for the course on any Japanese film. Toho Pictures did an amazing job. With a budget of only $23.9 million, Yamato set a new high for Japanese films as the most expensive movie ever done there. If the TRAILER reminded anyone of the new Battlestar Galactica, the movie does even more so. The cinematography of BSG is strongly echoed, as are several of the plot points (but in a good way).
The movie itself was very good. As with any adaptation, there are very high expectations to live up to. The story stayed loyal to it's anime origins, while also managing to go it's own way. I can't really say too much about the performances, as I don't speak Japanese. What I could get out of them was outstanding, though. I hate to say any more than this, as I don't want to spoil the film for anyone interested in seeing it. I highly recommend it for not only fans of the original anime series, but to sci-fi fans of any stripe.
Just watched "My Son the Vampire". Bela Lugosi played a mad scientist called the Vampire. As always he had hypnotic powers. The movie was a farse. It revovled around an older women doing basic vaudville routines and finished with a basic Keystone Cops chase scene.
My last swing through the Philly Film Festival came through. I saw Perfect Sense this evening. It was really good. It's about this disease for lack of a better term that starts hitting everyone. It sends someone into a fit of strong emotion and then robs them of one of their senses. Was unlike anything I've seen. Everyone should see this.

Very curious about Perfect Sense, so thanks for that one.
I just watched Fast Five. From a franchise that started with such a goofy premise and has milked it for so many movies... this "episode" is what I call the Ocean's 11 of the bunch. If you can, watch with a friend and make a pact: whenever either of you says "What?!" the other has to say even louder: "YES!"

Watched Cube last night. I'd always heard great things about it, but never got around to seeing until now. Excellent film. This is the sort of low-budget movie Syfy should be going for instead of their ususal dreck. Cube cost less than any typical Syfy movie, and was enjoyable as a genuinely good film (as opposed to being a quasi-intentionally bad movie done for laughs).

Good point. Now go out and watch Cube Zero. It's the third in the series and is a prequel. The main characters are the techs running the Cube. As good as the original or better. You can skipp the 2nd aka Hyper Cube. Watch them back to back for many WTF moments.
