Hint #3: Technically, there are 2 (1/2) answers I'd accept as 3 characters died within 2 issuses. I guess if no one gets it I'll reveal the answer on wednsday.
I'm surprised IgMo hasn't tried to answer this one.
In the 70s, Wildcat was written with Ben-Grimm-esque dialgue, even though he had in fact been a med school dropout as originally conceived. Presumably somebody noticed the discrepency and wrote an in-story explanation. What was it?

Not sure how they explained the Med school dropout part, But if I remember correctly they said he'd taken too many punches to the head.
aqhoffman is correct. In fact, one of the characters wrote it off as too many punched to the head, when in fact it was Icicle. I think he may have actually been mind-controlled Ted via it, but that is a sketchy detail I don't remember.
Of course, this is all because a Med School dropout can't drop his g's when talkin' or act like a sterotypical tough guy.
The Warlock and Infinity Gauntlet focus in clix right now got me thinking about the early "direct-sales" titles.
Can anyone recall DC's first direct-sales ongoing monthly title?

Superboy???? or is your Infinity Gauntlet a clue of some sort?
Hah! Nobody has it so far, but Michael Jackson would have been a great team up with a character that made his debut appearance early on in this series.
No, the Gauntlet wasn't a clue, it is just that Warlock was an early, if not the first, of Marvel's similar direct sales efforts.
