I'm fine with people playing non-thematic teams. I'm fine with Bullseye possessed by whatever killing dudes with his weird DC virus buddy and a bird chick while wearing Batman's Utility Belt. I'm even fine with the rising power level of stuff in this game. What I'm not fine with is having the most powerful things be the rarest things. Not only are entities all Chases, they're Chases in a set that isn't supposed to be on shelves, making them even harder to find and driving up their price tags. May as well call them Jaces.
I try to get out, and they pull me right back in...
Dude, I love you, jtall! I don't care what others say

WARNING: Haven is about to commit HCRealms blunder number one, and compare Clix to athletics, sports, or a real game that has real rules, balance, etc.
Is Kickball a subset of baseball or is it another game entirely?
It's another game that shares some common rules, but also has some important differences. Kickball is to baseball as Horrorclix is to HeroClix.

On a weekly basis, The Girl asks me if I'm "going to play Clix" on Fridays. I don't correct her and say, "I'm going to play HEROClix!"
Perhaps I should be making that distinction.
Is MageKnight Clix?
Is MechWarrior Clix?
(Oooo, here's the kicker.)
Is HorrorClix Clix?
None of those are a subset of HeroClix.
Agreed, they are different games.

Why would "Clix" be a subset of HeroClix? It should be the other way around. Anything with a clickable base should be Clix, and then it should get more specific from there.
I'm still wtih you, although I don't really understand where the "why would 'Clix' be a subset of HeroClix?" question is coming from.

But the basic premise of my original, and continuing, point still stands.
(For those of you who have not seen/heard this whole thing before
"HeroClix is a game with characters from comic books and video games.
If you build your teams based on those criteria, you're playing HeroClix.
Even if you're not following a strict comic or video game based theme for your team, if you're interested in characters, colors, names, personalities; then you're playing HeroClix.
And this is where you lose me. HeroClix is the game system, not a style of play. I can play Horrorclix the exact same way you describe HeroClix, but because I'm using a different game system, I'm playing Horrorclix, not HeroClix.
In the same way, whether I build my Horrorclix team based around the sculpts of the characters or based around their powers and combat values, I'm still playing Horrorclix as long as that's the game system we're using.
Statclix and Characterclix are ways to play the game, but as long as you're still using the same game system, it's still the same game. And neither one is right nor wrong, anymore than it is right or wrong to put ketchup on a hot dog.

I've met players who bring a team, tell me that they have a theme, and challenge me to figure out that theme. Sometimes it's something like Scooby Doo. Then they'll show me who is Shaggy, Velma, Fred, etc. on their team.
They are playing GoofballClix and I'm fine with that too. They're putting their teams together based on characters and some sort of twisted theme.
But it's when you disregard all of that and look only at the statistics of the figures that you start to play StatisticClix"
Granted, the fault for all of this falls squarely on the shoulders of Wizkids, and always has. As far back as Firelord, they could have been making a game that was balanced and was geared toward, and rewarded, thematic play based on the characters and properties on which the game is based and in over a decade they have yet to do so.
They know full well that morons like me will continue to buy their lousy game because of the characters and properties associated with it. It's damn ironic when you think about it.
Instead of honoring the properties and characters on which the name HeroClix is based, they continue to focus on competitive play where all that is disregarded. They continue to release game elements that make the game little less than Magic in 3D, and the horror continues.
Huh, look'it that. HorrorClix is back.
As for thematic play, there have clearly been attempts to encourage that, with team abilities and keywords being the obvious ones, although there are a few others. But you are correct that it's never really been a focus of the game, just a sidenote.
Personally, I like how keywords and some powers/abilities work that encourage you to play certain characters together, but don't force you to do so.
Things like this:
GREEN KRYPTONITE ENHANCEMENT: When a friendly character named Lex Luthor is within 4 squares and line of fire, modify Bizarro's attack and defense values by +1.

Cause it is clearly the best 14 points you can spend. Other teams may benefit more from Fragments or Hammers but on it's own it is just a great addition to any piece that can wear it pretty much.
Wizkids knew exactly what they were doing releasing Entities in a limited Edition set right before Con season. Anyone who thinks they didn't is crazy. However, this debate is what has kept the game going so long in my humble opinion. There has always(since Infinity Challenge) been a difference between as I call them, "Theme guys" who only play comic accurate or damn close to it teams and then the, "Meta" players who will use whatever figures, DC, Marvel, Indy, to have the best chance at winning. This is what keeps our community going to a certain extent. While I will freely admit to never entering a ROC tournament, I still have the right as one of those Theme guys to complain about the Meta game. Meta players should be more pissed at what Wizkids/Entities has done to their wallet then their game, while theme guys like myself just see pieces they don't want to see on the table across from them.

So, let's sit down and play this game with generic little puck/POG lookin' things. When you CLICK them, their statistics change. I have one with 10 Movement, and it's colored orange. That's Movement Ability Number 3. It also has a 12 attack and it's colored orange. That's Attack Ability Number 5. Its Defense value is 18, and it has a Special Ability that you can read about on the card. It does 3 Damage with no special abilities. On the back of the puck/POG there's the number 23. Some people call that a "Synergy Ability", but that's a misnomer since the game piece can use many of those abilities even without other pieces in play.
Yep, the word "CLICK" was in there, so I can see how someone might be inclined to call that game Clix. I see absolutely nothing to indicate that the word "Hero" should be included in the name of the game.
I see a lot of Statistics, however, so I'm totally fine with the name StatistiClix.
Yes, there have been some changes to the game that might make one think that the company making the game cared about the source material, but those changes were quickly exploited by StatistiClix players and made null and void and I cannot for the life of me think of the last time I remember the company doing something that made me think they cared about the source material at all. Supreme Taco League? F-Itself and other events like it? ROC events? This new PWNZR league? Was there anything in between any of these validating the playstyle of people who aren't playing StatistiClix?
The one huge advantage to running a theme team, is map choice (board control), which dictates pacing.
It is possible to run a competitive theme. With the "beginning of the game" order being essential to neutralizing or preserving your strategy, you'll want to ensure that you win the initiative roll.

Been looking at this closely since it is hard for Lydea to make theme competitively.
So far I think I have viable Mystical, Thunderbolts, Weapon X and maybe even an Avengers themes.

In years of playing this game, I've blamed a lot of losses on a lot of things. I've also attributed a lot of wins to a lot of things. Winning an initiative roll has never been one of those things, in my opinion.
