"There are only two ways to get rid of set retirement.
1. Everybody buys boosters like crazy and only stop buying the day set retirement starts, and then resume buying like crazy once they eliminate set retirement.
2. New people take over the decision making for MWDA. (ie. new CEO, or management, or owner)"
No, sorry, probably neither.
Magic the Gathering is the model here. They have been retiring sets regularly since they started, and they are still going strong.
As long as the game is centered around tournament play, and there is status/standing and occasional prizes associated with those tournaments, everyone who is interested in/hooked on achieving and maintaing status will buy the latest stuff to stay competitive.
Those of us old gamers who like to take longer to play our games (we usually play until one side is crushed or fleeing, not to an artificial time limit) will buy mostly singles from the secondary market so we can build the forces we want.

Call me pessimistic, call me jaded, heck call me a sorely disappointed INTERNATIONAL player/collector but I forsee making changes they think will help profits and MAY consider afterwards if these have had an effect on the game as a whole but so far I think the only good changes that have been made that will help the game have come after repeated whinges, gripes, pleading and moaning on the part of fellow players/collectors.
I have basically decided to only buy from eBay for my future purchses of MW until/if they bring out Ghost Bears. Being an International (don't know if you are aware but there is a whole world out there that doesn't live in the middle strip of the North American continent know as the USA) collector I have grown tired of the griping about not being able to get more that 1 gryfalcon or galactus figure at a conference, or griping about getting a second/third/forth particular send-away redemption piece or even being able to BUY a dropship. I would rather apply my hard earned money to a fellow collector or player rather that directly support a company that cares nothing about my enjoyment of the game only the profit it can suck out of me without providing the same/similar support as US players.
I like the new sculpts and I like that they seem to have sorted out their scale bungles of previous sets (but without seeing the whole set I can't be sure of that).
I fully expect the 'grey LE bases' to be another classic WizKids marketing fumble and will be pleasantly surprised if it isn't and instead ....
oh darn did I do a Draddog and not give a full answer :)
Oh I should have also mentioned how peeved I am at the fact that we can't buy a Dropship without taking a loan and selling a few organs on the black market to get it shipped from the US where as not only can US residents BUY one (or at least you could they may have stopped that), get one at a conference but now they have a chance to win one and they don't even have to buy any of the WizKids frikin stuff! How lame is that and you wonder why half the world shudders when they hear the words 'United States of America' and the rest fully understands the phrase "only in America"
DOn't know if it's been mentionaed already, but in one of the MK sets they released "foils".....these were basically standard figures but molded in a translucent white plastic and left unpainted. Basically just a collector incentive, and there were about 4 per case IIRC. I'd guess "Grey Bases" are exactly that...standard figure, standard dial, but the base is grey instead of black...purely designed to give the collector something else to chase and hopefully bumping up sales.
Like the sculpts.....Eldar Phantom Titans anyone :-)
Add me to the pessimistic, jaded and sorely dissappointed International player queue too.
Why are there wings? why do they look like something out of my little brother's coloring books? the designer of those should be shot on the spot!!!! and what is with the one with The 3 missile ports on diff. arms? The JF used plenty of summoners, where are they? those are the worst looking mechs i have ever seen. the elementals and the fenris are probably the best looking ones out of there. that stupid little scout car is just ######ed. yet again, more underweaponed, underarmoured, crazy, ######ed, insolent, winged?????, and studded chests????, those gyrfalcon- esque peices of **** should be doused in kerosene, and burned!!!
The Eyrie wasn't so bad when I first looked at it. Now that I take into consideration how awkward it looks with short missile pods, I guesstimate its size and begin preparing Gyrfalcon-like arm modifications...
When the first pics of the GyrFalcon came out I thought, pretty sweet looking mech. A bit too like an old rpg I once saw (I think it was called spirit mechs or some such) but ok, cool. And while the newer pics are still cool, I am disappointed in the lack of originality between the different designs.
Repetitive use of similar wing layouts and leg setups as well as bland body shapes. At least most of the sets and units I've seen to date each have their own individual style to them.
Now I'll still send props to the sculpters as I am sure the process is not an easy one, but come on, don't short change your audience.
On the upside, I like the color schemes and I do like the anthropomorphic slant. And I am hoping to also see more traditional styling in the rest of the series. Either way I will most likely invest in some boosters when it comes out.
As for the Grey bases, the win a dropship, and the other little marketing tricks they choose to use. Hey whatever, right? Those of us intending to buy anyhow will get a chance at something special, and those of us looking to collect will have something to angle for. And there is no use in complaining about any of it. They can't please us all, and they have to make money so they can come out with decent future series. Its a paradoxyl/catch-22 type of thing.
:classic: WOW! Will there goes a couple hundred more dollars out of my wallet. I hope I can win the lottery and get a good LE or the paper for the dropship! My favorite Clan faction will finally hit the table. YESSS...:p
For the last time, THOSE AREN'T GRAY BASES YOU ARE SEEING!!! Can you people tell the difference between the color "gray" and "black" with glare? The glare is quite apparant and present, just look at the actual figures. There is light reflecting off of them, proving my point. (The reason for the gray bases is light reflecting off of black bases, for those who don't understand my example...)
Mizerama you need to read all those posts and the actual story involved. Yes there are grey bases for some reason that we have yet to hear about. Thanks for the info about our lack of perception though.
