My venue is tempting me to be "That Guy" this week...
I spending a week packing for GenCon and putting together a bunch of highly competitive teams as I was playing around with the idea of trying out a grinder just for fun. Seeing all these great teams put me in the mood to play a really strong team. That desire was not met at GenCon as I mainly played Battle Royals and pulled relatively weak figures and my teams had very little synergy.
Now I come home and still have a desire to play a really strong team, but I want to hold off as my Friday venue is typically just a fun venue. What do I see is this week's build? 300 pt Modern age. Now the deviant side of me reeeeeaaaallllllyyyy wants to play one of the strong teams I built to fulfill that desire I have had for a few weeks. Yet I don't want to be "that guy" who may piss my fellow players off.
Its not about the prize as I have all 5 pieces from the OP kit and tend to give it to another person at the store when I do win one. I view it more akin to a guy who normally drives a Honda Civic each week having a desire to once in a while drive a Fararri (though in this analogy it may be more appropriate to say a tank).
What would you guys do? If your venue tends to be friendly/not uber-competitive do you get upset when someone shows up with that type of team?
I'd say that if you have to question at all whether or not you should play super competitively, the answer is that you shouldn't. If you could ask yourself that question and immediately have no problems, that'd be one thing, but the fact that you're questioning yourself for the good of the others makes you a very courteous player, which I respect.
I say play for fun!

Plus, if you are going to play competitively then you will force me to play the same way. Nobody wants that. Are you taking the train into work tomorrow or driving, Chid?
On a different topic, I have a new trade thread up and I have a few more things to offer than my old trade threads. Perhaps some ogres could check it out, make offers where applicable or just bump my thread if you don't find anything?
Agree on the not-play-competitively front. At most, warn everybody that the week following you will. Even then, consider if that's something that people will take as a challenge, or an affront.

Thanks. As someone who is going to be there I kind of wanted to hear from you on this. I really want to play a competitive team, but I am also torn with trying to check off more of the Cap set. Unfortunately there are no 300 point teams that are coming to mind from my list of unplayed figures. This has left me in a situation where the only teams that come to mind are meta-teams.
As always, I don't decide on train vs car until I get up. It all depends on how late I am running and how lazy I feel. Though I may be giving up on the train all together as they take the same amount of time for me and for some reason train time feels like wasted time to me, whereas I enjoy driving time.
As far as playing a competitive team, I say do it. You can play a good team and still play friendly. Just because you play a "meta team," it doesn't mean you need to play a "meta strategy." The LE's aren't anything special so if you win and you're not nuts for the prize, just give it to that fat kid in the corner that never wins.

why cant competitive and fun be in the same sentence?... Seriusly does my fun have to be the same as someone elses?...Its a dumb stigma. It goes along with the folks that try enforce highlander on everyone.
Note im not picking on Rob
And this is my vent for the day, no more comments on either topic.
Our venue tends to play two scenarios. This week they are playing 2 rounds with one 300 pt modern age team, then a third round with a 300 pt team where half of the team needs to have the Mystical keyword (due to a tribute to Wizard World being in Chicago).
As I like to play theme teams, I have settled on a nice friendly theme team for the first two rounds then a hard core team for the Mystical as the only Mystical figure in the Cap set is Hellfire and he doesn't fit well with other Mystical figures. Good compromise that I am happy with as I imagine that almost all the Mystical teams will revolver around one of 3 main figures. Therefore I don't feel bad using the same figures.
By the way, the 300 pt team I was thinking of doing for the first 2 rounds was Nightcrawler (Only played him once before), HoT Captain, Question, Mask-Killer & LE Diana Prince for a Martial Arts team. Really want to try that some time, but I like my fun team better.
He mentioned a few days ago that he was camping. Though having the ability to post on message boards doesn't quite jive with my picture of camping.

I played what I thought was going to be a very good team this week. Baron Zemo, 127pt Klaw and two of the 60pt Klaws. I was going to Master of Evil my way to victory.
The only round I won was the Bye round. Even good teams sometimes don't work out.
