On the topic of books, has anybody read Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London?
It's a bit like Neverwhere meets Harry Potter.
Knowing your feelings about both Gaiman and Rowling, I am entirely uncertain as to whether that statement should be construed as praise or condemnation.

I am undecided.
I'm only halfway through the book, which has taken me a strangely big amount of time, so that might point to condemnation.
On the other hand the book itself makes fun of Harry Potter and any similarities that might exist, so it deserves praise for that.

So my daughter is going to make me watch Fight Club. I haven't, because I figured it was mostly about fighting, which doesn't appeal. But she's reading the book for school and she is loving it and said it is about sooooo much more than fighting. So, good movie? About more than fighting?

Yeah, it's about a lot more than fighting and even more than just Jack's Body Parts (that'll make more sense when you watch it). The book is solid. The movie is also solid but just because we're saying it's not "just fighting" doesn't mean you shouldn't prepare yourself for some serious brutality. It's not a movie that leaves you feeling yippie-skippy or even yippee-kie-yay.
(Speaking of, during my "Bruce Willis-a-thon", just watched "16 Blocks" and I have to say that is also a solid movie. This is not Willis as an exasperated "Can't someone else do this?" action hero but Willis as a very world-weary being, long past his point of expiration (and while I never advocate suicide I suspect his character has only not done so because he can't bring himself to it). It's not an action film - despite a few gun shot sequences - but a character study and worth the time to watch it. Definitely made up for the abysmal "The Last Boyscout" which I finally broke down and watched because I've been referred to that title far too often and as long as I was watching Willis movies, why not? Because it was a hateful dark movie that made you feel sorry for even the cliches as having been dragged back out for usage again. That would be why, as I learned.)
"Nobody important? That's amazing. You know, in 900 years of traveling time and space I've never met someone who wasn't important."

Heh, Last Boy Scout. That movie oddly enough amuses me to no end. Granted I understand the themes in it were quite dark for a 90s buddy flick. But there's something about the absurdity of the scenario that I can't help but laugh. Maybe it's Damon as a star quarterback, which I probably would have laughed as hard at Any Given Sunday if I ever seen it.
If you let them kill your dreams, it'll haunt you.
