This situation reminds me of my experience a couple of years ago at WWC. I left work early (leaving a meeting in progress) to run over to the con to sign up for the Championship Play-in event. I arrive 45 minutes before the game was to start only to be told that the event was closed. Of course nowhere in the event description was any mention of limited players. I was told by the person running the event that there is always an unstated provision that participation could be capped. That didn't make me feel any better. Who was that told me this? Hair10, naturally. That didn't make me feel any better and I vowed never to return to a WWC. Looks like today confirmed that decision all over again.
Not a whole lot, really. I brought a Darkseid team that my friend built for the Unrestricted event on Thursday and did somewhat ok with it. We weren't allowed to pick our maps, so the first game the map (AW Tank map) really hurt me, but I still thought the game went pretty well. I was about to KO one of his figures when last action was called as I finished another attack, so when we tallied the points, we both had 101 and I ended up losing the die roll.
The next three days of events are Restricted and I brought virtually no figures with me, expecting to maybe get a few in the dealer hall, but that idea didn't turn out too well when I discovered only one vendor was even selling non-SR/Unique/LEs.
While the lack of map choice hurt me on Thur., it REALLY helped me on Fri in the 300 Restricted event, where I was on the Origins Museum map the first two games and the bank for the third. I had a Kid Flash team that I literally slung together ten minutes before the event. Although they missed a ton of attacks throughout the day, it was virtually impossible for my opponents to ever get to them. I kinda laughed inside, because those figures are just ridiculous for their cost and I really felt bad for my opponents. I ended up winning the event due to the guy I was supposed to play in the fourth round dropping to attend another event. I heard he was playing a chase KC Supes team, so I really don't know how I would have done against that kind of team. Would have been fun, though.
Today, once again, I went to see if I could find some figures to buy to play in the tourney. I bought a Batman Alpha booster which didn't have anything good in it and found a Trigon for $5. Soooo, I went with Trigon, Protected, and Fortitude for a one-man army. I know these kinds of teams don't do well at all and I totally didn't expect this one to either, but surprisingly it did VERY well....except for the first game. I was going up against Kyle and his Skrull team (which I loved, btw) and he played the Malice BFC. My initial thought that I stood a decent chance against this team quickly vanished and much to no one's surprise, the game was over with in about ten minutes, with Trigon taking about 6-7 clicks of damage just from that card. I'd never experienced that card before and honestly it seems to be a very extreme one. No sour grapes here, though, as I congratulated him and told him I would have played that card then too if I had it. He's a great kid and I always like playing with or against him. I ended up wiping the next two opponents and finishing third (I think), so all in all, not a bad day and I was really pleased with how well Trigon did as a one-man army.
Tomorrow is the Hulk Event dial tourney and as you may have guessed, I don't have a team ready (or probably enough of the right figures without replaying some of the same things I already played this weekend).
So far, the games have been great, the players have been fun, and the Judges have been doing a great job as well.
Sorry for the long reply. I don't usually do this kind of recap, but I'm pretty bored right now and had some free time...

I played in the 500 point Character Smackdown as well & I too, was shocked when we sat down to hear it was single elimination.I also got knocked out first round because my opponent ran his team away as soon as the 5 minute warning was announced.

Got outed in the first round myself, against a JSA lineup that I just couldnt roll to put down (or hit Vet Shazam sadly). I really wanted to break in the LE Arwyn I bought and Stormin' Norman too.
Most depressing. Poor show, poor show.
Hopefully WWHulk will be smoother.
The "surprise" single-elimination doesn't shock me (WK has *always* done something outside their own rules at every major event: it can be as simple as not actually running swiss, or only getting 3 rounds in a 6-hour even, etc.). <- Such things are the reasons why I stick almost exclusively to the Battle Royales; although with new higher costs, I'm not sure that's a winner either.
I remain disappointed that WK doesn't offer more "dumb fun" events parallel with the cut-throat big events. The conventions should be about seeing players sitting down, having fun with the game pieces so that someone walking by the area (or hearing about it afterwards) thinks "gee, that looks like it was a lot of fun!
Hair 10 made top 8 with this, which he has dubbed "The Squirrel Blender".

Pure awesome!
I've played my share of GL-close-combat tanks, but I'm not sure I really understand some of the decisions on this team. In particular, the Warbound seems a tad wasteful (but not terribly so, given Talia's low cost) but I think the thirty points might have been better spent Upgrading Dr. Midnight, or maybe even swapping in piece in place of one Talia.
