We are in countdown mode. My players and I are organizing a mass viewing after our big tourney on FCBD.
Hey Chi, are you planning to see the film with us after the games?
What time will this happen? I will need to be back in River Town at a decent hour since I live an hour away from my church and need to be well rested in the morning.
The tourney isn't set to start until 4, so I would guess we'll be hitting the 9-10 pm showing. I kinda figured you'd need to bail after the tourney, but I wanted to make sure you knew what the day had in store for us just in case.
Between working the FCBD booth at the Chalk Walk that morning, the tourney in the afternoon and the movie that night, it's gonna be a long day.

So last night around 11:30 some kid started playing an oboe in the parking lot right outside my apartment. I have a difficult time falling asleep an a daily basis, and I was asleep; so being woken up really cheesed me off. BTW, I live on the third floor of my building. So anyway, I walk over to the window, looked out and said without really raising my voice "guys, it's 11:30". The kid looked back up and said "Oh, was I being loud?"
I really wanted to say something like "Can you tell that I am not really talking that loud but you can hear me clearly? Now imagine I was playing a freaking oboe. Yes, you are being extremely loud, very late at night." I opted to just end the conversation quickly by saying "Yes" and went back to sleep. I do wonder if anyone else called security on them, because this is a grad school dorm with lots of children and such.

I used to live across the street from a guy who would practice bag pipes on his front porch. It would be around 5 or 6 pm though. I'm guessing whenever he got home from work he would fire them up.
When I first heard them I wasn't sure what was going on. It was semi recognizable as music. Was hard to place where it was coming from. Once I noticed where and what it was I found it amusing. Though it wasn't waking me up put of bed. I think some of the neighbors eventually made him stop or move to his basement.

fwiw, he sounded good and it would have been pleasant at 5 or 6. I think he was a college student with no sense of time. I did that all the time when I was in college (impromptu band practice at 11:30pm, totally did that), but the majority of people at my school now are in the Masters program, have families, and go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Well the guy with the bag pipes I'll say was getting better. I didn't really mind it so much at all. Some folk just don't appreciate bag pipes though. So he was doomed probably no matter how good he was.
Though any musical instrument at the wrong hour won't go over very well. Even if the demographic of your school was of a younger variety I'm sure it would have it's limits.

...and this is why, if the world were more like a New York State campground, you wouldn't have this trouble and fewer city folks would feel compelled to use their air conditioner as a soundproofing device.
'Cause on a state campground, by setting up your tent, you agree that at a certain hour after dark, it's officially "quiet time." Which means if a ranger drives by and decides you're being loud, you get a warning. After that, if he or she has to come back, you're told to leave.
Not unlike the sign I remember in a certain saloon: "Be Good Or Be Gone."
No muss, no fuss -- very cut and dry, though, of course, the ranger's decision on what's in keeping with "quiet time" -- like the bartender's on what's good behavior -- is a subjective one.
But I don't think the oboe would get a pass.
...thus spake the guy who thinks personal freedom is a two-way street.
EDIT: Of course, the situation comes a tad more complicated if the guy making the noise already IS home.
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!
