With the possible exception of Apocalypse these are some of the best figures ever created. Yes they all have weaknesses but they are quite capable of having a team built around them to maximize their efficiency and have been fielded as such.
True in a 300 point match it is more difficult to build some of them a good team but outside of conventions I found that 300 games were no longer the norm and a great variety of build totals were being utilized in many competitive tournaments opening the door for these beasts.
You must also place them in the context of the meta game into which they were created.
Ultimate Thor ruled the game because of outstanding numbers, a cost under 200 and the anti Stealth capacity which was sorely lacking for Marvel at the time the Ultimates set was released. His defense was seen as a boon when he was carrying a paramedic across the field as he blasted the opposition to peices.
Darkseid's Omega Beams allow him to pull an enemy from 12+ spaces(with perplex) across the board and place him at your convenience so the rest of your team could slaughter him. Or he could remove a troublesome pc from range to be dealt with later.
Green Scar, while not as powerful as the other pcs, was still one of the best Hulk's ever created and at his inception, had available plenty of feats to make him even more viable by balancing his non flying weaknesses..Fortitude and Swingline to name a couple. Coupling him with Fabian Cortez was simply brutal.
Lampost Batman won me plenty of tournaments when Arkham was released. He's incredible. Charge and flurry is a tremendous combination no matter who it's on. Being able to couple him with Commisioner Gordon so you can pull him right back out of combat when he's exposed is just icing on the cake.
If your post was all meant as pure sarcasm then ignore everything here and replace with "Well Done LOL".
You are absolutely correct! When reviewing any character on, let's say, a scale of 100%, every figure will go up a few points when you start assigning feats.
However, you have to draw the line somewhere.
For the purpose of picking a "top 5", you have to have a level playing field and use the least common denominator. This article was a list, not a review, and for that I apologize for the poor communication.
A list is only good if all is equal.
As a corallary, we ought not rule every piece "teh suxx0rs" because it is susceptable to TK+HSS.
First off, I was thrilled to see that Thanos (SN) wasn't on your list. (I fear that was due to low opinons currently, and not because he's actually as awesome as I believe him to be.)
Second, I agree with your stance on feats. When writing about figures, they should only consider themselves. Then the reader can go, "his weakness here can be made up for with this," or, "playing her with this figure will make her more playable". I'd hate to read nothing but talk about a fig + a feat, and look at my fig going, "but I don't have Protected..."
A list is only good if all is equal. For example, if you are choosing the "top 3 best hulks", is it fair to put Rampaging Hulk + Fortitude as #1, but put Green Scar + Protected as #2? Not really, because each feat drastically changes each character. Now, if both are assigned the same feat, then now you have a better comparison. But as I said before, what's the point of talking about HeroClix figures if I just assume they all have protected?
You keep attacking this strawman and it keeps dodging.

The problem here is that you wrote an article that by definition is meant to go against the common opinion of a figure and that means you have to argue your opinion, not the other way around.
Secondly, I find that the article lacks context: You never tell us how many points the build is that the figures are judged by. I assume you are using a standard build of 300 points, but you should tell us explicitly if it is so. Supposedly, this list is based on dial only, not dial + possible feats, something you first care to tell us in a comment on page 13. Not only is this a pretty significant criterium that you choose to keep to yourself but also one that will further invalidate your article for all those who consider some of these pieces good, but only given certain feats. Feats has been a big part of this game for a while so if you choose to not rate the character based on their potential with feats, you should tell us in the article.
Thirdly, you claim that these pieces are overrated. Give us examples of these ratings, you could easily quote from the units section or even something a local player has said. Just tell us what is being said about it before you refute these hypothetical claims.
To me it's not really important if I agree with the opinions presented in an article or not. I've nearly wet myself laughing while reading Ol' Duts reviews in spite of disagreeing with his arguments, but this article seems too occupied with childishly insulting the figures and maintaining some aloof attitude about those who find them great instead of actually arguing a case. It's really on the level of trolling, given that you knowingly talk unsubstantiated smack about figures you know people like.
That's reason for my rather snarky comment earlier and that's why this article did not sit well for me.
"I just sold you for a cigarette and I don't even smoke!" - Monarch, The Venture Bros.
I totally agree with Ignatz as well - when doing something like this I try to actually think deeper than just the figures dial. You have to include possible teammates, all possible situations and teams the figure could find itself against, and feats on the figure and on oppossing figures. Clix is not a game that you can just look at a figure in a vaccuum and say that it is overrated. It just doesn't work to me. Way to many probabilities in this game to be able to even compare dial to dial straight up, it's pointless.
In my personal experience I've only seen nightwing get beat down. He can't take a hit and keep going. Unlike the 120 pt chase bats who takes a hit and stays awesome. Hit nightwing for 3 and he's done
Something everyone seems to forget is Nightwing Starts with Incap of his first click in instead of a Natural 3 Damage.
Nightwing works best in a Team, Preferably Titans so you can bouce him between his top 2 clicks.
Here is a great team that showcases what Nightwing can do
Crisis Nightwing (Insider Information)
Crisis Kid Flash (Manuever)
Crisis Liberty Bell (Protected)
AA Robin (Flash Bang)
You can Peel Clicks off of Kid Flash who wont need to actually succeed his attack rolls to use Manuever and can always be where you want him, Liberty Bell Hits Hard, Robin Supports and Nightwing is Support Second String Attacker, who with Inside Info Dominates every other decent piece with the Detective,Martial Artist, and Gotham City keywords (which is almost every insanely annoying peice in the game)
Including the ones you name in your next post, Karnak? Bronze Tiger? Shang Chi? Ironfist?
They wont be able to stop Mr 12AV 19D, especially after he Outsiders there Combat values.
9 attack 16/17 defense with combat reflexes? Seriously... I mean is there anything that needs to be said about that? I'm not saying he's ####, but he is not even close to as good as some people say. Maybe I overlooked him, but every time I've played against him one hit and he becomes obsolete. He ends up having to run to try and get healed. And like I said before incap these days is not what it used to be, and a 10 attack isn't either. 19 is not hard to hit anymore, so I'm not sure where you are coming at with that as being some unhittable number. Especially since all the figs you just listed have 11 attack. I have to hit an 8 unmodified, which is close to the average die roll, just off by 1. I'll take any of those figs over nightwing any game.
And on that 4th click he's not using the outsiders TA anymore anyways.
Tell you what I'll use him at my next tourney and see what happens. I've only used him a couple of time. Maybe I need to give him another shot. He's not complete trash, but I just don't really like what he brings for those points. It's the 3 TA SP that makes him cost that much, which doesn't do much for me.
While I disagreed with your mentioning Apocalypse (he's beastly, especially with Cammo), I fully agree with mentioning Ultimates Thor.
I've had both Thor and Ultimate IM since right around the Ultimates Pre-release. Ultimate IM is far and away the better piece. He still hits hard, has more move and attack, faces down swarm teams better, and is cheaper. I've been saying since Ultimates that Ultimate IM is the better piece (and he's still awesome even today). Ultimate Thor gets tagged far to easily.
I've used him, and fought against him. He's far more likely to go down down in flames (remember when a lot of people would try running him, and get pounded for for it). That low defense is killer. Between the two, I will usually take Ultimate IM over Ultimate Thor. Slap AP on IM, and he's still cheaper and far more deadly.
"Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad,
He's so bad, he mak'a me mad
Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad
He's a real cad, Un-fun Dad"
Anyone who doesn't or hasn't abused Chief needs to be slapped in the face. That figure is downright nasty when abused. Must be something about the wheelchair, as Oracle was the same back when she was released. Still is to this day somewhat.
It all comes down to how you use the various pieces. That is the best part of this game and why it should never fully go away. There are what, roughly 3000 different pieces to play. Options like these are welcoming. That way not every team is required to use certain pieces to be competitive. There are people that can use Nightwing and there are people that can use Chief.
It's awesome, if you really think about it.
I love this CP...and you know that I love those two...add in a couple underrated figs, Mento & Meik, and I might very well have a team.
