So the reason for the errata was "our players are stupid."
THIS IS THE WORST REASON FOR ANYTHING EVER.
:looks around:
Yep. Makes sense to me.

Bye then, I guess.
Seriously, who ARE Gandalf and Nightwing that they should be theme team bonuses with everybody? Gandalf has never even MET any non-LoTR characters and yet people want theme probs and map bonuses for sticking him on a European Defense Initiative team? Nightwing should get bonuses for joining Elders Of The Universe? Really?
The fault here for WK is not that they took this ability away. It's that they gave the stupid thing in the first place and I say good riddance to it.
And if you really think that being able to copy any keyword of your choice is useless without the theme bonuses then I don't know what to tell you.

Yep, this. I can think of a few different interactions off the top of my head that'll make it worthwhile.

I don't get free probs or bonuses to map rolls, of course, but I really don't think that I DESERVE them for teaming Doom and Gandalf. Guess some folks would though.
Where did I put that can of logic-B-gone that I got off of that late night infomercial? Hmmmm...

Well, modern age wise, it is only Nightwing! Nightwing is like Batman, but better in team situations. Where Batman usually likes to stick to himself, Nightwing has no problem joining and helping other teams. Makes perfect sense to me that he could be a theme team on whatever team he wanted.
On that note, there are more things that should have been worried about than these 2 characters.
Maybe like the fact, that the HULK! can be taken down from a few GCPD cruisers. Or the fact that Chanos can just ping you turn 2 from the other side of the map. Let's not forget about the normally based character with Power Cosmic, Avengers keyword, Hypersonic Speed, and Multiattack.
and We're going to worry about a 94 point character with a trait that made him truly unique.
I have more of a problem with Nightwing and Gandalf being "theme" than I do with any of the "cheese" pieces you mentioned.
Probably mostly because people can actually admit they they're playing cheese in those cases...

The Bolded parts of this is what I find the most troubling. I'm unsure who this "TechG0d" is, but if they represent WK in any official function then this is a serious PR problem that can have major reprecussions for the game.
If this is an accurate description of WK's attitude regarding the properties they have, then this could cause Marvel and DC to reconsider their relationship with WK.
I know the "This will KILL Clix" hyperbole that gets applied to everything including Gauntlets, Chases, Sculpts, Tournaments and Set releases. But what will truly kill Heroclix is if Marvel and DC decide WK is no longer the best option for their license.
If I were a holder of an Intellectual property one of my primary concerns with licensing would be "Will my partner make a good faith effort to provide representation consistant with my vision, within reason?"
One of the warning signs are if my licensing partner would admit they "don't care about the stories involving the characters" in a public forum.
Of course I don't know the entire story. But I can see the "WK doesn't know squat about the characters" quote becoming a lightning rod for trouble.
TechGod is not involved in design, only playtesting and rules questions. A working knowledge of comics is completely irrelevant for his position. Now if he were a designer of figures, on the other hand, you'd have a ridiculously valid point.

The RA's job, or at least it WAS, was to make rulings on what he thinks WK/the game dev department of WK intended, so WK isn't bogged down by all these questions and can design the next set. Fine.
TechG0D apparently overstepped his bounds. By, like, a LOT.
This isn't a bad decision, either. A bad decision is an orange posting an oops in the Rules area here.
No, to get this into the new PG, the RA had to consciously, and actively, pursue this agenda. Because it is in the PG, it was the result of his crusade, as you put it.
I really, really think that WK needs to reevaluate their current RA, and the 'powers and responsibilities' of future RAs. What happened here is inexcusable and unprofessional.
WK approved the change. It would not have been changed otherwise. Ergo, they probably won't be replacing h over this change.

A Theme Team is not the "be all and end all".
Most of the teams I play are not Theme,
and I have a lot of fun,
and have a good record, even though I am not getting Theme bonuses.
I think there is a Zero % chance that Nightwing/Gandalf will get changed
back to what they were.
I also think there is only a 1 % chance that they will change them
to have the Keywords from their specific Universes.
Even though that is what I believe they should have been changed to in the
first place, and I still think that it what they should be now.
ie. Nightwing should only choose DC Universe keywords,
and not be allowed to choose generic Keywords.
His Trait is called: 'A Leader on Any Team' !
What exactly did Game Design and/or the RA think that stood for?
ie. Gandalf should only be allowed "Tolkein" keywords,
and not be allowed to choose generic keywords.
In my opinion Neca/WizKids/RA do not always make changes that
are for the betterment of the game.
Sometimes they make the wrong changes.
Make changes for the wrong Figs.
And seem scared to change what should be changed.
If they talk to Game Design and it is decided to change something,
what if that change is not always for the best?
Who has final say on if a Powerful piece is changed for the worse,
or if a weak piece needs to be changed for the better.
We all know Game Design has made a lot of mistakes on dial design.
( although it seems to me the mistakes are coming less often lately )
What they should be worrying about is that
Fin Fang Foom can pilot the Robincycle,
and Galactus can pilot the Cop car.
Stupid.

But I don't see any definitive proof of this. How do we know who talked to who? Or that it wasn't just a misunderstanding?
I personally don't think the arbs lied, but if they did and it was shown, I definitely would be pissed.
Maybe it's the terms we're using. When I refer to arbs, I'm thinking Oranges. I don't really know TechGod, and so I'm not really mentioning him. Too much he said she said for me, about no one I even know, so I'm not just going to assume the worst even if I don't agree with the decision.
The traits did work as intended. Tech God didn't like that he saw some people not understand the start of game rules. So he got things changed on figures cause of it. That is from his own account (source: The Pod Cast)
He also admits that he dose not read comics or know about LoTR. sooooo
So, ideally, the person rendering judgments on how comic book characters interact with each other within the game should probably be at least familiar with the characters in question, especially to better understand their special powers;
So some honesty with the 'problem' might have lead to something more productive (better understanding of the starting of the game rules), rather than the ridiculous "intent" story we were being asked to believe;
So maybe players aren't as stupid as all that (though you seem to believe so)

And didn't he also say that he didn't know that ASM wasn't out yet?
Even the least informed steady player knows that.
Doesn't he buy boosters?
Or listen to announcements?
Or read up on the Powers of upcoming Figures,
and Know When They Are Legal To Play Or Not ! ?
Pfff.

I feel like TechG0d just house ruled Nightwing/Gandalf/Noh-Varr. Except he did it for everyone. And lied about how GD wanted it that way.
Also, after listening to the podcast, can someone explain to me how the idea was to make it so people don't forget to do stuff, and yet, TechG0d advises people to not forget to name a keyword when playing Gandalf/Nightwing (and no mention of noh-varr until later, with no reasoning behind making him "have his cake and ice cream and eat it too", but screw those other two). I'd love to hear a debate between TechG0d and someone who didn't agree with the ruling, instead of two guys agreeing with everything he said.
This doesn't make any sense. At all.

no it dosn't. The dishonest around the rules is troubelsome. The matter at hand is not a big deal, just changes a few figures. But the rules maker being dishonest...is a problem
I won't go into how absolutely stupid it is to have someone involved in a game based on a source material that has pretty much said he doesn't know or care about said source material. That's a topic for another thread.
No, my issue here is that we were lied to, that we have an RA more interested in simplifying things that don't need it than actually doing his REAL job of interpreting the rules, and that in the end there's been too much time and effort spent nerfing figures that don't need nerfs and buffing figures no one cares about and not enough spent on the real problems.
I'm seriously, seriously disgusted with this whole situation right now. It's a shame that quitting the game wouldn't actually do anything but hurt my LGS, because WK/NECA nees to realize what effect incompetence, dishonesty, and bad game design can really have. And yes, I do feel this is incompetence on TechG0D's part AND on GD's, because there was nothing wrong with the way the figs worked in the first place. So there was no call for TechG0D to go beyond the nature of his position and change the wordings the way he did. And it was incompetence on GD's part that led first to the ambiguity, then to the apparent "meh, whatever" reaction to TechG0D's changes. Then they lied about it being the original intent, when it was our esteemed RA's intent, not GD's. And it's poor, sloppy game design that lets situations like this come up in the first place.
Man, I hate to be one of those people, but I really miss the days when Hair10 was RA...

I was gonna play at Sean's venue (down the street from my house), but I think I'm not ever going to get around to it. Here we go again with plot-hammered rulings that address a problem no one actually thought was a problem. And then, let's have a podcast where the guys on the podcast basically yes-men their way through his "answers" because for whatever reason, they think it's a better ruling when no ruling was ever even needed.
My theory is everybody at Games and Stuff was using Nightwing on theme teams that have nothing to do with teams he'd be on and one (or several) beat Sean or someone Sean knows and likes with it. Ipso facto, somebody told him (because he knows nothing of comics) Nightwing shouldn't even be on the Avengers and now it's 'hey he's got a lot of keywords already guys' time.
To me, it doesn't matter, because we totally disregarded the ruling in the players guide at our venue. I'd call it a house rule, but really it isn't because now I find the entire players guide to be suspect and I must follow it only for the purpose of US and World Championship style teams.
