I didn't even notice the trend until you pointed it out. I just had Inferior Five in mind because I've been commissioned to do clix mods of them. So far the only ones I've finished are The Blimp and Dumb Bunny (which, I think, was the original working title of The King of Queens. Or was that According To Jim?)
There was a guy once who threw pies at members of t a team of conscripted supervillians. He had an son who followed in his footsteps. That son joined a heroic team. That team had a crossover with a third team with a somewhat similar mission to both the team the son was on and the team of conscripted supervillians the father was on. For a short while, that third team was led by an elder statesman of the first super-hero team. He had a daughter who for a while joined perhaps the largest heroic team in the DCU.

The Blimp = King Of Queens,
Dumb Bunny = According To Jim,
Debbie Does Dallas = Little House On The Prairie,
Deep Throat = Mister Rogers Neighborhood,
Godzilla = Perry Mason,

Name all the teams.
A team of conscripted supervillains: the Suicide Squad.
Son's heroic team: the Outsiders.
Third "team": Checkmate.
First super-hero team: Justice Society of America.
Largest heroic team in the DCU: Justice League of America.
This set of answers assumes that I correctly remember Digger Harkness throwing pies at his fellow Squad members, that you mean "first super-hero team" in terms of chronology and not in terms of "first super-hero team mentioned in this question" and that your criteria for "largest" takes in all versions of the team over the years.

When our story opens, the Question is investigating an impossible locked-room murder mystery involving a midget and a 6'6"-tall call girl into heavy bondage. Don't worry, I'll explain later. It's all vitally relevant.

I still think the Legion is larger by far then the JLA... unless it's the JLA of the "One Million" storyline.
In terms of membership, the All-Star Squadron is the largest. Check their entry in the Who's Who '87 Update if you don't believe me.
I believe you. I'm not a big fan of the Legion, but they always seemed to be a huge team from what I have read... bigger now then ever in the new mini-series.
