Yes. It was much slower. Though the con seemed a bit slow overall.
Maybe that's why I thought it was so great!
Seriously, with the extra price in Royales with cheese and all the great guests this year (I haven't really noticed in the past or bothered with the lines so I don't know how this compares to past years), I spent a lot of time filling in my comic gaps and getting autographs and sketches. Never really done that before, it was a blast!
Keep in mind that a lot (or at least another reason) of the slowness could have been because Origins was this past weekend as well. That can affect those that usually go to both, but opted for Origins instead. Even dealers had to make that decision too.

I played in the 500 points Unrestricted Smackdown (for the Fantastic Four starter) & one other Battle Royal.
I was dissapointed to find out the 500 point game was Single Elimination. I would of liked to play more teams. As it was I got to play 2 different teams (somehow my Astonishing X-Men team won the first game).
Anyway I played: Vet Shadowcat (sinister), Danger Room Cyclops, Mutations & Monters Colossus, Mutations & Monsters Lab Coat Beast, Mutations & Monsters Emma Frost, Universe Starter Wolverine.
First round I played against Green Scar, KC Flash and Mutations & Monsters Emma Frost. Like I said somehow I won. I got supper lucky & hit Flash with my Emma right away. He Ko'd 3 of my figs but I got Green Scar. I almost got KC Flash but ran out of time. I rolled after time went off to see if I would of hit but missed so I feel less bad about not gettin him heh. It was a really good game, back & forth alot. The guy I played was a lot of fun & a good player, I just got really lucky.
The 2nd round was against Thanos, A Mandroid & a ton of Rookie Destiny's. This guy made the game a lot of fun because he was super-nice. Including letting me get off a Fast-ball special with Colossus/Wolverine. I hit THanos once with Emma, but never hit him again. I took out a few destinys, he killed everyone but Wolverine.
Also kudos to the guy who played an all Shield Army with Halo Figs modded on them.
In the Battle Royal that same guy also help me win the Battle Royal (I won a Planet Hulk Event dial which I traded to my friend who really wanted it), so again thanks!

That would be me. Although I would have liked to play my Halo-SHIELD guys a couple more rounds instead of the single elim BS we ended up with. I had just made that FCBD Iron Man mod and would have liked to get in a couple of more games with him.

The Taste of Chicago and the Pride Weekend were also this weekend amongst other things that could have taken away from the pull.
Next year it's going back to the beginning of August though. That should up the numbers. Except I think Lollapalooza is normally that weekend.

and this is why i hate the tourney scene......clones (unless doombots or the sort) should not be allowed.......no fun at all playing against a team of dupes....teams should be constructed around factions (avengers, xmen, etc) period.
those types of teams are outlawed at house games around here

In house or local tourney games, I'm in complete agreement with you. However, it's the National Championship and I went for something goofy and (at least I thought) funny. Would you rather I used rookie Shazam as long as there weren't any dupes on the team?

Disappointed WK had no SI figs to showcase. On the flipside, WoTC had two display cases of upcoming figures for Star Wars (not due till August) and D&D mini's.
Wixkids booth was anemic at best. nothing there to get excited about. WOTC definately looked like the healthier of the 2 at WWC.

dont get me wrong hair, that was not directed at you.....i understand you almost HAVE to field a team like that in a tourney scene......the fact that you tried to have fun with i speaks to your betterment......that comment was directed at how WKids needs to change tourney formats to not allow dupes of figs......keywords/teamwords should be used for construction purposes

And there's plenty of people who would throw a fit and start ranting about quitting if that ever happened. No matter what they do WK is going to get flak from one side or the other. I'm not a big fan of playing dupes myself unless there's a good reason but just because it's something I don't enjoy doesn't mean I think WK should impose that rule on everyone else. I've really gotten to the point where it's just, you play what you enjoy and I'll play what I enjoy. And I definitely don't think teams should be restricted to keywords or TAs. What about figures that have neither? Or figures that would be legit on a team but don't have the right keyword or TA?
I just saw this post on the WK forums. This is from the judge that was running the 500 point unrestricted game which suddenly turned into a single elim game at the last minute. I'd respond to it there if I could...

Not that anyone complained to me about it when I said single elimination or i might have changed it.
To me if your not competing for the prize then you might be better off walking to dealer hall or seeing a talk. It not like anyone would have stopped a player from playing a game in the WK room if after they did not win (my games don't have losers).

First, let me start by saying that I like Adam (PhilentQiller). He's a very nice guy. But his statements are completely ridiculous. First, why is he allowed to change the format of the game right before it starts? Obviously, we all didn't hear him say that it was single elim either because there were a bunch of us that were completely baffled by not being allowed to play a second round. Secondly, where does he get off deciding that it would be better off for me to walk the dealer hall instead of playing the game?!???
I'm completely baffled by this response. I'm also still somewhat amazed that neither Wade nor Norm was willing to step in and do something about it.

I guess that falls under section 2.8 of the HCTR:

2.8 Disclaimer
WizKids reserves the right to alter the retirement rules at any time on a temporary or permanent basis, including allowing specific exceptions to these rules for special events.
Sadly WK has so much trouble following their own silly rules that they need this broad disclaimer that only applies to themselves.
