I think that 5 rounds for something where there isn't something big being given away may deter players. Especially if it's just casual. In addition to your 5 rounds, using a power only once per round may increase the length of the tournament drastically. All of these rules and guidelines to abide by for a very casual tournament may not be the best idea. I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic. I guess it all depends on what kind of people show up and what their expectations are of the tournament. Perhaps having them understand your goals would assist you in drawing players?
I've been thinking about this for a while. I'm wondering is it possible to have a "big" casual tournament that is a win/win for everyone. With a lot of comments I've read here and there it seems that casual players want a fun event with "no cheese" and just play clix. I wouldn't mind that. But I'm trying to figure out if such tournaments would just create not an alt or counter meta but an Elseworlds/Earth X multiverse meta that is great to look at if your not living it.
Here are the rules sets I've come up with. I'm willing to talk about tweaks and such. I do want to make some things clear. I have zero input when it comes to ROC. The only thing I do control is my show. If the thread tuns into "NOOB RULES" or "Those Cheesy players..." I will request for the thread to be locked. I'm trying to stay positive.
With all that said here are my rules set and win conditions.
1.Entry fee of X
I noticed that most people come to events where something is guaranteed and are willing to pay for a sure thing. I've seen people come out of the woodwork for AVX, Bat Belt, and IG then never see them again. I think that to have a big casual event people need to know they are walking away with something. That is going to cost the venue/host. So they got to recoup the loss.
2. Matches.
I think matches and brackets won't matter that much. Tell me if I'm wrong. I'm thinking doing 5 rounds. That will be the tourney. No out rounds. No 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc from match wins. Does this sound good or not?
3. Team composition.
I hate to say it that a ban list would be mandatory. The main reason I feel that is needed is that figures have psychological barriers. Even if the figure has counters and weaknesses most people will not go to an event if their plastic nemesis can show up.
Comic accurate would be required. So we are looking at highlander unless the figure is a generic. No resource dials, relics, or colossals outside of Sentinels.
Since the teams need to be comic accurate I would remove all theme team rules and advantages. Keywords still work but they are more for validation for your teams.
This next idea might be the most controversial. You can only use an power once during your turn. So if a person has 2 probs or perplexes on their team then they can pick 1 character that can use that power. Enhancement and Empower would have the same limitation. The main reason I think this may be needed is that most of the complaints I see are not really about figures but about stat mods. The rule of 3 only helps so much. But by limiting powers to one use per turn it stops a lot of the stat mod abuse. It also makes it so a person has to diversify their team.
4. Maps
I'm thinking that limiting the map pool might be needed. I don't know. I would really like feedback on this part. I do think that no orange rules may be a must. At the same time it creates a new set of problems.
5. Fellowship
I'm thinking that fellowship has to be killed for an event like this. The first reason is everyone is walking away with something and there are no rankings. Not only that I think that any way of doing Fellowship will be seen as favoring a group of people or another. I don't like the vote on fellowship because it gives big edges to groups of people coming to the event. I don't like rewarding the most comic accurate team because it leans to the judges bias way to much. Dice rolls can be loaded.
6. Event progression
I think the biggest thing is establishing a continuing progression through the tournament. So round one starts an event. Round two we see a progression of the event. I think if everyone has a card or piece of paper that reflects some sort of trait or faction alliance that would have some effect on the game. I don't know if all the effects should be revealed before the tournament or not. I would like feedback on this part.
That is it. I want feedback. Please note I'm targeting casual players. This event gives 2 flips about meta.
I like it Edward. I like it alot. I'd like it even more if you invoked a "No Resources" clause. Just for a breath of fresh air into the game. A return to the "good old days," if you will.
