Maybe the 1970's to very early 1980's, but anything other was junk (IMHO). The late 80's and 90's was not known for great comic book writing, only flashy art that couldn't make up for the poor writing.
Don't forget, Doc Oc once had adamantium tentacles. I remember he beat the holy heck out of Profesor Hulk with them when the Sinister Six re-formed with advanced technology from a parallel universe, and Gog was the sixth member (he had kicked Sandman off the team by melting him into glass).
If you are still anti-Cap I would suggest checking out the Ultimate version of Captain America in the Ultimates. Here is a guy that is kicking you know what and taking names.
Holy Joe! In the first story arc he lays out the Hulk. And this is a Captain America that has no qualms about using a gun if that is what it takes to get the job done.
What's with all the anti-Cap sentiment? Ultimate Cap? Call him something else, 'cause that's not Cap. He doesn't take down the Hulk in 3 shots, he doesn't like guns, and he doesn't resort to kicking in the groin to get the job done. He holds himself to the highest standards of duty and discipline, and no one can make him change that.
Come on, the real Captain America mauled Mister Hyde for maiming Jarvis. He decapitated Baron Blood. He mounted the Controller while they were falling out of a plane, and beat on him all the way down. Captain America can play as rough as anyone, but he's not a brute, he's precise like a surgeon's scalpel. The essence of the Cap isn't in Ultimates. You discredit the real thing when you compare him to that cheap Superman knock-off.
Sometimes that "A" on his forehead stands for something other then "America." Sometimes, late at night in the Avengers Mansion, you can still here him moan, "Oh, Bucky!"

Yeah, I remember that. Funny tid bit. Peter David didn't like the way Larsen wrote that fight, so pretty soon after that, Doc Ock showed up in the Hulk comic and got embarrassed, bad. The fight didn't last long. Hulk just grabbed the arms and tied them into knots. Fight over.
Captain America was a soldier during WWII. This has to be one of the most brutal wars ever. The weapons and tactics used were nasty and brutal and up close and personal. Its not like today where you can wipe out enemy forces from 10 miles offshore.
I always found it odd while reading my Captain America comics back in the 1970's that he never used a gun or killed anyone. I mean: come on! He was a soldier during one of the most horrific wars ever. A soldier gets the job done no matter what.
I admired Cap that he was able to survive without needlessly taking lives and held a higher code of honor than the enemies he's faced, BUT
fighting fair (ESPECIALLY during a war) is hard to believe. Even the knights from the Middle Ages fought "dirty" at times. Yes, even the "good guy" knights.
The Ultimate-version of Captain America is exactly how I perceive a soldier to behave during a war/battle/fight. Especially a soldier from the 1940's. Which is the era Ultimate Cap is from.
Think about it:
Giant Man/Hank Pym just brutalizes his wife, the Wasp/Janet and leaves her near death from being attacked by mauling ants.
Ultimate Cap finds this out. Ultimate Cap, the man "out of time" from the 1940's behaves like most men would from that bygone age. Swift justice. Just like in the Westerns and War movies of old.
In this day and age the Liberal (*cough cough* @ $ $ # 0 LES!) and PC thing to do would be to reason with the person or contact the police and let the courts decide Giant Man's fate.
I for one don't see Ultimate Cap from the 1940's sitting Hank down and talking to him about how nearly killing his wife was wrong and that he should "do the right thing."
That would be like watching Wyatt Earp or John Wayne or Clint Eastwood (the latter two in whatever part they are playing) sitting the "bad guys" down and talking to them instead of blasting/fighting away.
Citizen: "Wyatt, Hank just robbed the bank, shot 5 people and killed a woman while getting away."
Wyatt: "Let's form a posse and track him down so we can reason with him."
I DON'T SEE IT!!!!
Morality and ways of thinking are not the same today as they were in the early 1900's.
I think Mark Millar is doing an excellent job in portraying Ultimate Cap.
Captain America is and always will be a soldier. Soldiers are not trained to fight fair. You don't stay alive or win battles by fighting fair.
You didn't see Captain America kicking people in the nuts in the 60's when he was revived, did you? In wartime, he didn't kill people because he wanted to, he did it because he had to. He doesn't necessarily like fighting, and he hates killing. It's just what he has to do. He's never been about excess, he'll go as far as needed, and that's all.
Cap during wartime was always humble, no matter what he could do. He grew up as a puny weakling, probably got beat up a whole lot as a kid. Do you expect that he'd brutalize people after he beefed up? Let's go with something everyone's read. Uncanny X-Men #268, Cap hesitated before jumping into the horde of ninjas. He wasn't as confident in his abilities, and wasn't arrogant by any means. Not characteristics of someone who would use their brawn to impose themselves on others.
Cap's high moral standard is what set him apart from everyone else. What would be the right thing to do in the situation with Pym, beat him up, or have him answer for his actions? Cap always takes the high road.
Yeah, mounted, funny. Find me a better word to describe hanging on to Controller in position to strike him repeatedly.
The other thing here Game, is the Ultimate Universe is decidedly dysfunctional. So everybody has modern type personal problems.
I like Ultimate Cap (and the Ultimates), but i regard him as a separate character from the Steve Rogers we all know and love. If you can keep that straight in your head, everything's easy.
And you guys defending Ultimate Cap's beating of Hank Pym are leaving out that he actually does have the hots for Wasp. More dysfunction for ya.
Am I the only person that realized that the Ultimate in Ultimate Marvel should be called Dysfunctional? Is there any character that has their head on straight in Ultimate Marvel?
