Totally agree. One of the reasons I cancelled Joined at the Hip was because I found the role writeups for the characters were boring and uninspired.

Totally agree. Sometimes I just get in the zone, and hammer out a whole ton of stuff, enjoyably.

Probably the same reason I've been really digging Fiasco! Before the game you write a story based on what dice you rolled, and what choices others make. Definitely shoehorns in stuff you wouldn't pick otherwise, which makes for a great challenge.
