Tell me, which would you prefer to play with or against, a "theme team" of X-men or JLA with a Con Artist or Paramedic or a cheese team of Thor, TK, BP and a medic? That's right, probably the theme team in both cases (if you don't mind playing cheese, you have no right to complain about impure theme teams).
At my venue, about half of us are there to win. Very few use cheese, but very few also don't care at all about losing. What's good about theme teams with those figures are that they are both (relatively) comic accurate and they are competitive in tournament play. That's not to say theme teams without CAs and medics aren't competitive, but with them, they're more.
Besides: if you don't like theme teams with those figures on them, don't play them. But complaining when other people do doesn't make sense. No one is forcing you to play a particular type of team
However, I've known people to mod figures - like an Alfred mod on a paramedic base.
Your thoughts on that? Just as bad?
Strangely no. Mods are fine by me. One guy at my venue has modded an entire team to look like some Anime (don't ask me which, I don't follow animes). Nothing wrong with using a base that makes sense into a figure you truly want to play and it hasn't been made yet.
Course that's just my opinion. It also depends on how sincere the person is you know? If you get the impression they just want a paramedic on there team well that's no good...
I think where the disagreement comes in is that there is some statement that using a generic to fill some points or make a team slightly more competitive isn't being part of the theme. Which is silly.. you can't use the analogy of Rhino being on the x-men makes it not an X-men team because he's completely different. Someone called a paramedic, and not paramedic Sally whomever, means it's a generic person, not a specific marvel person. It just seems like a silly thing to complain about.
Regardless i'm not going to change your opinion and you're not going to change mine.. Therefore my theme'd team with the competative help of a paramedic shall stay.

St. Cuthbert: I agree with you. I would rather play against the JLA with a paramedic then a Thor team. But why call it a Theme Team? Why can't it just be a "JLA heavy" team.
PaxZRake: It's not bad. Just a pet peeve of mine.
This particularly bugs me here on the Realms when someone posts a team asking for help. Said person will say they want an X-Men Theme Team and list 6 X-Men he might play. Then someone comes back and says drop so and so to a rookie so you can fit in a medic. AHHH! That's not a Theme Team. Bad Advice. Theme Teams aren't suppose to be cut throat and don't have to have everything a Tournament Winning Team should have.
Once again. Just my opinion. So stopping throwing the rotten fruit.
I enjoy playing theme teams that have no team affiliation. For example:
The FLAME HEADS: E Firestrom, Dormammu, LE Daniel Keitch, MJ Watson-Parker, Human Torch, and/or Nova.
I'm at a particular disadvantage playing this team, I know it before I play. If I had enough extra points I would not add a paramedic or a mandroid to help out, as it would ruin my theme. So I suppose I am a purist, just not a team oriented purist.
"Remember what you have learned, save you it can." Best sermon ever!
Regardless i'm not going to change your opinion and you're not going to change mine.. Therefore my theme'd team with the competative help of a paramedic shall stay. [/b]
Which is how it should be. Heroclix is a different animal for different people. Nothing wrong with that. I wasn't trying to put a value on the subject, just stating a pet peeve, not trying to put down people who disagree. As you can see from this thread neither of us is alone in our thinking.

We don't care so much about paramedics, because in a good battle they dont' come into play much. Besides I find it hard to believe that there isn't some mutant with the power to heal people. Lets just face it sometimes you don't have enough pts to play xorn.

True I was just using the X-men as an example since I'm in the process of thinkign of a team for them.. I forgot about Beast and Jean Grey.. :P
Those are things that when I make a themed team factor in, if the team already has a support person I don't feel the need to at the para.. Just switch my statement to Avengers and ignore the xorn.. :P

Fun story about V Beast. I got him in a trade a few weeks back with a guy who really wanted my Bruce Banner but had no Uniques to trade. So I played him in an X-Men team a week later and get knocked down to the last clicks and lo and behold he had support. I was very happy as he did some healing for me that helped win the game. The little surprises on a clix sure can brighten your day.
