"Best" is one thing; I could mention lots of those. My FONDEST book of all time is one that has personal memories attached to it. If anyone out there has seen it, you will know that IRON MAN ANNUAL #3 was among the weirder stories that were being written back then. It was I.M. with Man-Thing guest-starring in the deep South against a long haired Molecule Man. As bizarre as it was, it was among the books that I read during the greatest summer I ever had as a kid...
1 - DC's The Shadow. I forget how many issues, but it began with a miniseries by Howard Chaykin. Awesome update of The Shadow for the violent 80's with all new agents. Got kinda weird in the last issues, but great characters, really cool action. Anybody ever notice Todd McFarlane's cop characters from Spawn are direct rip-offs of Twitch and DeWitt from this series??
2 - Werewolf By Night - From number one on up till Iron Man made an appearance, but particularly the ones with Mike Ploog doing the art. Great series.
3 - The Punisher. The original issues are awesome, up till the point where they pitted him against The Kingpin (around ish. 15 or so) and for some dumb reason he didn't kill him at the end of the storyline. It went totally against the character and the series went to pot after that (they put him against Dr. Doom at one point! Oi vey!).
4 - Button Man: The Killing Game - Terrific British thriller about mercenaries playing a death game in modern day London and the countryside.
5 - Marvel's Damage Control - About the guys that had to clean up after the super hero battles. Funny stuff. Two mini-series.
6 - Alan Moore's From Hell. Staggering story. Totally engrossing.
7 - Batman: Dark Knight Returns. Nuff Said.
8 - Lone Wolf And Cub - the original, not that futuristic junk.
9 - Katsuhiro Otomo's Domu - about a psychic kid and a psychic old man battling it out in a tenement.
10 - Anybody remember Weird War Tales? Boy I loved those. Can't remember any issue numbers, sorry.
11. - Garth Ennis' The Unknown Soldier mini-series.
12. - The original Plastic Man comics as repackaged in the DC hardcover. They're really creative and insane.
