Great article! Never crunched those numbers before, but they are interesting. Since this is a guide, you might want to include a final price point that buyers should look to spend on the piece, giving the averages you state above. I know you could surmise it from the data you present, but something in bold at the bottom would be nice. Just a suggestion though for an otherwise great article.
Lead me not into temptation, just point me in the general direction and I'll find it myself.
I really liked this. I'd like to see one for all the uniques of the set so it'd be easier to gauge prices and worth. And of course one on older, rarer pieces as well.
best of the new articles. I've read a lot of them and some of them have been quite good, especially as they started coming out but ive lost some interest, as they all seem about the same. This is one series of articles that ill be reading regularly! great detailed info!
Excellent. Well thought out and relevant. After going 19 boosters in a row (!) without hitting a unique/SR, the secondary market looks very enticing for the single figures that I want.

I probably bought about 10% of the KC GL's and Flashes you found (dougmachighlander). My goal is the reverse of the seller mentioned in one reply: once prices begin to settle and a low precident is set, I try to purchase for around that price, with the ultimate target to pay the lowest amount of all. All my players at Highlander Software have a KC GL now (thanks to me), so when we play the Big Green Monster, it comes down to skill on the battlefield.
You said you didn't include the purple-ringers, but actually my estimate above does include those, and the average price would be higher, since they are much more available in the pre-release period, but with higher initial price. I'm a completionist (except no Masterpiece figures - just a matter of time).
The price-to-obtain scenerio you mentioned above does work very strongly on all collectibles, though in my experience, the playability and coolness factor does make a significant impact. For example, when Nightcrawler came out he was rare to obtain, but also an extremely cool and popular character from a very popular comic. He was the only HSS character available for Marvel. Now despite retirement, he's still rare, but the coolness factor has remained, due to the X2 movie and new X-Men titles.
I used the same argument for price-to-obtain in purchasing Dark Phoenix. I live in Alabama, so a plane trip, convention pass, hotel, food, and all the goodies I'm sure to buy, far exceed the $100 I spent on Jeannie, and in a few days I'll be playing with her. I think it's a great bargain. Plus I couldn't get away from work right now.
Thanks for the information and the excellent writeup. You had to spend a great deal of time collecting the data, so I admire you for that.
Good article, thanks. Looking forward to more in the future.
Will you ever do any reporting on prices for pieces that weren't sold on ebay? Like asking retailers what they sell pieces for in the collectible market?
Very interesting. Maybe you could do the following:
1. The rest of legacy's uniques in two installments of 4 each.
2. The Ultimates TA uniques from Ultimates & Giantman
3. The KC uniques from Unleashed
4. The O's from Cosmic Justice who just mock me.
