I've gotta say that I'm pretty happy with most of DC. Sure, there have been bumps and bad decisions, but DC's greatest strength is its ability to plow through bad plots and return major characters to the standard we know and love (I sight blue and red Superman - yuck).
DC fails in its treatment of the incredible characters it has acquired from other companies over the years...
Fawcett's big hero was Captain Marvel. He was the most popular hero in comics and outsold everyone including Superman. When DC acquired his rights (after a lengthy and very expensive copy write dispute, which DC NEVER won, but caused Fawcett to give up for financial reasons) they eliminated him from the market. I can totally understand why. Superman didn't need the competition.
But that was years ago and Superman has solidified himself atop the genre as the #1 superhero of all time (please, no fanboy remarks... truth is truth). Yes, Captain Marvel is finally getting some very big PR from DC in 2005 - and rightly so. He's a great character! And Black Atom was the Superhero/villain of the year in 2004!!! But what of the other fantastic Fawcett characters? Bulletman, Bulletgirl, Ibis the Invincible, Spy Smasher, Masterman, Mr. Scarlet, Captain Midnight (originally a Dell character)... and others.
Archie Comics (never owned but licensed by DC) had such greats as The Hangman, Black Jack, The Fox, The Web, The Green Falcon in addition to The Shield, comics FIRST star-spangled, shield toting super-patriot! (Take that, Marvel Comics).
Gold Key (now published by DC) had such greats as The Phantom, Magnus Robot Fighter 4000 AD and Dr. Solar (who had some limited success when republished by Valiant Comics, in the 1990's).
Charlton Comics had innovative characters like The Peacemaker, Judomaster, and Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt. Luckily we get to see allot of their three best: Blue Beatle (R.I.P. - but not for long), Captain Atom and The Question.
And then there's Quality Comics who published some of the greatest characters ever conceived. Superheroes like The Human Bomb, Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, Black Condor, The Ray, Doll Man... and all the rest of the Freedom Fighters. There was Plastic Man (who, thank god DC has totally adopted), The Spider, Blackhawk, Captain Triumph, The Clock, Quicksilver (yes, before Marvel. Now Max Mercury, who we luckily get to see occasionally in the pages of The Flash).
I'd even like to see more of DC's very own original characters - Take the Crimson Avenger for instance (of Detective Comics). The Crimson Avenger was DC FIRST costumed super hero. Older than Superman and Batman! (only Dr. Occult is older - but he doesn’t wear a costume) - As far as I'm concerned I appreciate the revival of the name "Crimson Avenger" in the pages of JSA, but the jury's still out on the new version of the character.
Okay... my point is... If I were in control of DC and had access to these great characters I'd use them more! I'm not saying I'd push aside the big 7 but let's take the JSA for instance. Given a great writer and consistent art, some of the characters listed above could be regenerated and republished just like many of the JSA legacy characters.
In Marvel... easy.
I'd declare Xavier's endeavors to integrate mutants and humans a success. C'mon people. Is it me, or are there more mutants in the Marvel Universe than regular people? Its OVER! Mutants are here to stay... and guess what... regular people don't even care!
With the sudden revelation that they are no longer a persecuted people mutants could relax and be absorbed into society like they've always wanted to be. Super groups like the X-Men could drop all the pretense and become SUPERHEROES instead of back-alley do-gooders full of angst. Magneto can get to helping or destroying the world, whichever he likes.
Under my authority there would be NO mutant books... just a bunch of superhero titles that all got back to the old "Marvel Way" of one universe for all books. I'd keep a tight reign on MU events but would promote creativity by reviving the "What If" concept. However, "What If" wouldn't be a single publication. Like DC has done with "Elseworlds" titles, it would be a demarcation of out-of-continuity stories, which could be published under EVERY title.
Wow, that's just a start! If I really get going I'll have to do more work than if I actually did take over. Whew!
Heroes have an infinite capacity for stupidity... THUS ARE LEGENDS BORN
Oh, and I'd totally eliminate the Ultimate universe and put that same energy into creating interesting stories in the classic Marvel universe. New readers don't need #1s and history reboots... They need great stories coupled with awesome art that will pull them in and keep them interested!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heroes have an infinite capacity for stupidity... THUS ARE LEGENDS BORN
The mutants , I hate all that thing about "we are mutants" "our people" "everybody hate me because I'm mutant" thing I don't hate the mutants I hate that actitude!
In my Marvel Universe the mutants have his own country and stay dear (Genosha is right?). Then the poeple will live paceful. and the mutants can have his fight in Genosha!
But if you likea lot we can have 8-12 fugitives mutants, who like live adventures, but just a few like in the begining, they don't deserve be so many!
Agree about the Ultimates line! some books are good and is nice don't need all the history as backup BUT if you right good historys you can tell all the info what you need in each history.
darkseid would be the end all and be all of bad guys, like he should be. when darkseid shows up, things end.
no more superman going toe to toe with him.
the "omega effect" would be powered back up.
no more doomsday or superman walking thru it.
if darkseid does notice your little planet, you better believe it's going to take every hero and villian to save you.... and there will be casualties.
and dead is dead
jason todd would stay dead. barry allen would too.
barry is more interesting dead than he ever was alive.
hal... sorry buddy, you've got to go too.
supergirl... back in the dirt.

Actually, a diff company some years back printed a Bulletman & Bulletgirl series, with Fawcetts blessing, apparently, DC only bought the rights to Shazam/C Marvel and his "crew". The stories of bulletman/girl were all new stuff, based on the originals (having to cut out refs to certain, no longer owned by Fawcett, chars). It didn't work out, I'm guessing. I can't remember the company that did it, but I know it was all done on lease and wasn't DC (or Marvel).
DC:
Superman- After living on earth for so long, supes finally realizes that being mankinds protector is not worth it. Disgusted with the whole human race, Superman turns to kryptonian culture and history realizing their ways are far superior to humans. He becomes a religious figure and forms a cult to turn humans to kryptonians, believing it's the only way to cleanse the planet of all moral sins. Millions of people have now adopted him as a savior and follow his word fanatically as he is now at war with the rest of the world in his endevour to turn Earth into the new Krypton, with Kal-El as the undisputed ruler.
Wonder Woman- This is not the amazon we all know and love. Turns out, Diana is really Gaea, spirit of the earth. She has come because mankind is slowly but surely destroying itself. Upset at the direction her children are heading, she becomes a champion of the people, in hopes to save them before it's to late. Her power is almost unmatched by anyone on earth, save for one. It's a long and bitterfought battle but Wonder Woman still fights it for her people and only one stands in her way: SUPERMAN!!!
Green Lantern- The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic empire, lead by the Guardians, who want supreme rule over livning beings across the cosmos. Their best and number one lantern is Hal Jordan, a former resident of the planet earth. He became the mentor of a promising young lantern, another earthling by the name of Kyle Rayner. On a mission, Rayner was in the situation of having to kill a childhood friend he knew long ago. Unable to, do the job, Hal Jordan disposed of the insect. With a new perception of right and wrong, Rayner defects the Corps, vowing to help bring down the Guardians and Lanterns with the very power they gave him. Outraged by his protegee(sp?) for humiliating him in the eyes of the Guardians and other Lanterns, Jordan sets out to make an example of Rayner to those who cross him and the Corps. Not alone, Rayner makes an uneasy alliance with the only other person ever to defy the Guardians. With his own yellow power ring, Sinestro is Rayner's partner in bringing them down but will Sinestro's own agenda of stealing the Guardians power allow the two of them to work together in stopping a common enemy?
Superman: An advance scout from the Kryptonian Empire, which is located so far from Earth that even with Kryptonian technology it would take at least a decade to reach Earth. Kal-El was in stasis for the duration of the trip, completely unaware that after his departure the Empire fell to a mysterious and powerful race in a horrible war. After a brief time staying incognito on Earth he signals back only to hear a distress signal, followed by a very matter-of-factly stated notification from the invading race that the Kryptonian Empire no longer exists. Kal eventually comes to terms with the fact that he's stranded on a planet primative by his standards, and begrudgingly takes up the role of protector of humanity, in which he recognizes some semblance of his race's ancestors. He gives a very evident air of superiority and tends to rush into situations using brute force, as was characteristic of his militant race.
Green Lantern: The Green Lantern Corps is something of an intergalactic police force, seeking simply to maintain order in their region of the Universe and remain as neutral as possible. During a routine patrol an accident occurrs, killing a member of the Corps within plain sight of retired Air Force pilot Hal Jordan. When taken by the Corps for containment purposes they sense that he is pure of heart and offer him a chance to become a member. In his twilight years, knowing that most everyone he knew is dead and yearning for the rush of flight and adventure, Hal accepts, and through exposure to the ring is rejuvenated to the height of his youth. He casts aside what was left of his Earthly identity and sets off on the greatest adventure of his life: membership in the Corps.
The Flash: A convict looking for an easy way out of a life sentence, Barry Allen willingly hands himself over as a human guinea pig for a military-run genetic engineering program, banking on his slim chance of survival. He is the first successful subject in the Supersonic Project, which grants him superhuman speed. After testing is completed on him, however, a group of religious fanatics overtake the compound, claiming that genetic engineering is against God's plan for humanity. They destroy the compound and escape without a trace. Thanks to his new powers, Barry escapes, the sole survivor of the attack. In a personal epiphany he sees his survival as a sign that he's been given a second chance in life and resolves to use his newfound speed for the benefit of others. However, the government believes that he was the one who destroyed the facility due to lack of evidence to the contrary and taking his previous criminal record into account. So, Barry becomes a drifter, helping others where he can while trying to hunt down clues to the whereabouts of the cultists that inadvertently framed him so he can clear his name.
I'll probably put up some stuff for Marvel tomorrow. Right now, sleep.
I`d nuke both companies and put out one comic a month where Iceman and Blue Beetle team-up and rough up everyone else. And there would be a hundred variant covers every month.
