Dark Circle, Adult Legion, the new HQ, darker, yet still somewhat light stories, teh Legion Academy, the Fatal Five, the Sun Eater, the Legion of Super Villians, and a whole mess of characters.
I think the Legion would have gone the way of the Super Pets-- fondly remembered, but done with-- had it not been for his run.
I agree. The Pre-Crisis Legion was always fortunate in writers. I love Edmund Hamilton's stories from early in the Legion's history, where plot points would often revolve around Legionairres coming up with clever ways to use their powers as a team.
Then Paul Levitz's run later included some wonderful epic stuff such as Earthwar and the Darkseid story. Like all long comic book runs, the Legion had its ups and downs, but I can't think of a single extended period of time before Crisis where it wasn't usually a lot of fun.
Side note: Jim Shooter also created the villain Parasite in a story he wrote for "Superman."
