Hmmm... Iron Maiden like costume? I was thinking Iron Man would be Penance. Maybe Tony just made the costume. A friend pointed out that the armor may be conduit for all the villains in the Negative Zone prison, a way to channel their powers into the suit to put them to good use...

well the current rumor is that Penance is in fact SpeedBall.

A profile on the character in the newest issue of Wizard says that his story comes out of the Stamford incident (he feels remorse over it) and that he wears an Iron Maiden-like costume/device because his powers are induced by pain. Of course as we all saw in Frontline, Speedball's powers seem to be re-activating...but only when he's injured / bleeding (getting beat up in prison, bleeding out in the ambulance after getting shot) so it seems like a good match. Perhaps this is Speedballs 'community service', but working with the Thunderbolts.
