It wasn't anything ground breaking, but it was a pretty good Joker Story. Joker takes over a game show and holds the audience hostage. He spends most of the issue tortures the contestants with the promise that if they answer a question wrong, they lose their life and then faking them out with harmless gags when they do miss a question. Meanwhile the show's producer tells his people to keep filming and stall the police because the ratings are going through the roof. In the end it turns out Joker was recording everything the Producer was saying and plays it for everyone to hear. He then poses the question of who is the bigger monster, him for holding the studio hostage and threatening lives, the Producer and Network Execs for caring only about their ratings or everyone at home for just sitting idly by while everything plays out. To me the only drawback of the issue was the art. I really, really did not like the art style. It looked to much like melted crayon or a badly done oil painting to me.
Oh and did anyone besides me get a chuckle out of the little Ambush Bug/Dan Didio comic at the end of this week's issues?
I didn't really like the story. It was ok, but like you said, the art was hard on the eyes. And I didn't like Joker saying it was the most fun he ever had, even without killing anyone.
I actually liked Joker's Asylum. The art was a bit hard on the eyes, but I think its a nod to the Ledger Joker look coming up this summer.
As for the story it was classic Joker. Everyone expects him to kill someone on that show, he even gets them worked up about being killed. In the meantime he's recording the producer's bloodthirsty hunt for ratings. The Joke builds until the punchline, where he misdirects everyone ruins a career and has everyone guess WTF was that all about. In short the joke only has him laughing. Not a bad little Joker tale in my opinion. This series should get interesting with Joker's take on all the Arkham baddies. I'm in a for a few more issues I think.
I didn't pick up the Joker one. I'm probably skipping all of them except for the Penguin one, because I love the Penguin. I'd decided that even before I heard Jason Aaron wrote the story. I can't wait.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
1. Jonah Hex #33 - Rated 9
"Son, I believe that you will find more distinction of appealing character in a given number of horses than in an equal number of men one meets in his life."
Jonah Hex faces off against some pretty nasty Canadian mounties.
Palmiotti and Grey make every issue of Jonah Hex outstanding, and this series has been abnormally blessed with a list of fantastic artists. That said, Darwyn Cooke is able to bring a storytelling technique that raises the bar that much higher. At whatever point this series gets cancelled (hopefully far, far into the future), this particular issue will likely be regarded as a stand-out. With this and Patsy Walker: Hellcat #1 coming out on the same day, I think the theme for the week is Beasts that rise from the snow.
I'm a hardcore Jonah Hex fan going the whole way back to the 1970's, and I will say that #33 of the current run was a standout issue for both series. 10 out of 10 all the way and, as always, one of maybe a half-dozen current comic titles actually worth reading.
(BTW did anybody else catch the part where Hex gives his name as "Fleischer"? Man, I rolled.)
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
Michael Fleischer was the writer of Jonah Hex back in the 70's and 80's. Nice tip of the cap to the man, that...
