I don't mind the occasional 2-3 months where they cross over somewhat related titles (X-whatever, Somewhere in the world Justice Leagues, Pickaspot USA Avengers, Spidey and his Amazing street level friends), But keep it confined to a limited time. These year+ story lines going over every title in the rack is ridiculous.
Marvel used to do it with the annuals (3-4 issues, crossing over 3-4 titles, the annual of those comics bringing them together for a story), same with DC (I'm thinking when they created Waverider)
I don't even think it's so much a matter of whether or not you're a fan of that story. I'd simply like to get more than one big story for all the money I am spending on all those titles.
I collect a few of the titles crossing over with Dark Reign - Iron Man, Hercules, Mighty Avengers, The Initiative, and Agents of Atlas (collecting all of them for reasons wholly independent of Dark Reign). Thus far, I don't have any problems with how these specific titles have handled the Dark Reign crossover. What is starting to get old, though, is the fact that all of them are basically treading the same ground.
Because I am old, I grew up at a time when 25 Marvel titles would cross 25 different types of ground every month. Marvel used to have a much bigger variety of stories in those days. These current crossovers, with their long and clinging reach, keep half of Marvel's comics, for months at a time, all publishing one, giant-sized story.
I'm not suggesting that crossovers end or even that company-wide crossovers end. I would just like to see them toned down in terms of time, depth of commitment for tangential titles, and quantity of titles that go all in.
Or, if that isn't possible, how about a 6-month hiatus between each of these many-tentacled Bendis/Millar/Quesada brainstorms?
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
Then there was that first ever cross-over event. That's when Namor first met Jim Hammond and the fighting began. Sub-Mariner Vs Human Torch, in Marvel Mystery Comics issues #8 & 9, in 1940.
The biggest problem i've got with cross overs is what's gone from costing me like $30/mo for comics goes to $100+ when I have to (compulsively have to) pick up every stupid tie in.
Disassembled ->House of M -> Civil war -> WW Hulk -> Secret Invasion -> dark reign.
Toss in Annhilation (better than CW), and my funds drop significantly
Oh yeah.. and King Breaker/war of Kings.
I too thought about dropping the earth bound marvel people.. However.. Even the space bound are being tied into the same crazy tie ins..
WW hulk I never picked up though I know it tied in somehow. I'm trying to track down TPB's of them, although that doesn't make it all that much less expensive than having just purchased them. It gets ridiculous!
Rep to you!
Another thing that REALLY annoys me is when I read my comics I usually order them in the order I like reading them (saving the most enjoyable comics for last).
It really gets on my nerves when some story goes terribly out of order because of it.
I don't know why I ordered it that way, but Deadpool came before thunderbolts, so I ended up reading magnum opus 1, then 3 (without even realizing it) and then going on to read magnum opus 2. I was so confused for a while till I realized what I had done.
I don't mind deadpool crossing into thunderbolts, but make magnum opus 1-4 in deadpool, and have some counter story (or even call it magnum opus) that won't mess up the flow of the story from not reading it in order.

At least the Space books are all generally pretty good (and smaller in number).
Certainly.. The space books are freakin awesome. Nova has made a huge leap from a character I didn't really care about at all to one of my favorites now.
His book is just so darn good comparitively.

In all fairness, WW Hulk was the best of the crossovers. All of the minis related to it were good. Unfortunately, like the other, the ending left much to be desired. Marvel has a tendency to bring the story to an exciting climax and then bring it down to a devastating crash landing that leaves its readers with a bad taste in their mouths. If Tony could hit Hulk with all of that power to revert him to Bruce, why bother sending him out in space?

See, I would ask that these mega-events stop all together. They have forgotten how to tell a story and instead just sell us hype. The only solution I have come up with is to not pick up anything that was sucked in to the events. My only hold out was She Hulk. Now that Marvel screwed with that title until they killed it with Peter Frickin' David, I can safely say nothing I read is impacted by the big events. The stories just aren't that good, and honestly I refuse to invest the cash needed to keep up with them. I'm going back and buying older comics from the 80's. They're cheaper, they're written better, and I'm much happier reading them than I am with 90% of the new stuff. Try it. You'll love it too!

Yeah, but they nerfed the ending...badly. Blaming Miek and not letting the Hulk kill one of those who wronged him were huge mis-steps. Watching him deal with the remorse and then trying to attone for that would have been interesting. As a society we've become all about revenge. Seeing the Hulk get revenge and then deal with its aftermath would have made for some compelling reading. Instead we got a great story in Planet Hulk and 99% of World War Hulk, but then pure drek for an ending.

I was kind of hoping Hulk would single-handedly return (with the Warbound armada) all pissed off and looking to kill some people when he realized... earth was under control of the Skrulls!
They beat Hulk to the punch! Then he comes to realize he was probably sent off planet by an idea hatched by the skrulls. By defeating the SKrulls, he'd prove a point that the Earth needs a Hulk, redeem himself AND make the illuminati feel like the jerks they are.
coming soon : nu52 Hercules

i think both big events are awesome!! both have LASTING effects on both universes, and both can make and break certain characters. with green goblin(lets call him what he is) being in charge, the whole marvel u just got flipped on his head. with blackest night bringing back just about any big time dead person(super or just human) thats pretty big!! it really doesn't make sense to not have all the books be effected by a big event.
every characters in the dc u has had someone die in their book, so why not have them come back?? in marvel, all the hero books(except thunderbolts and dark avengers) has a hero as the star, so why not have them effected by a villian being the most powerful man in the world?? i understand that ppl don't want to collect every single issue to get the whole story, but that why they have a core book, and the tie-ins. even if you don't read the tie-ins you should be fine with the core book.

you ending would have made me happy, the real ending did not!! the worst thing about the ww hulk is the fact he ended up dumb ol hulk again. why is the comic world so scared of letting the characters grow. i really hope hulk gets smart again and takes the warbound and his son, and go back to space where he was awesome!!
