First of all you are not using Dr. Midnight, that is one of the main problems right there. I have been luckily successful with every JSA incarnation that I have made and can give this advice.
You do not always have to play Spectre.
There are some combinations of characters that should carry another or be carried. I always find that GL should carry Wildcat while a lesser character should carry Sandman. Someone should carry Johnny Thunder until he pushes off that starting click. If you play Spectre have him carry either Dr. Midnight or Sandman.
Vet Hawkman should always be holding a Tombstone or a Desk.
Have your highest defense carry Wildcat and make sure that Wildcat is based with another figure that cannot break away easily. If you want an extra chance at regen use the experienced version.
If you like playing the JSA try to use the All-Star Squadron keyword, they are just as useful.
Also, stop playing 1000 point games.

I am going to agree with the first point and respectfully disagree with the second point above. 1000 + pt games are fun and beg for the JSA to be played. But you can play them successfully in lower point totals
Here are two teams I've ran successfully:
Quote
E-2 Superman w/ Shellhead, Fortitude, & Protected
Dr. Fate LE (BIBTB) w/ Coordination
Sandman U w/ Coordination
Johnny Thunder LE w/ Coordination
Green Lantern R (OR) w/ Stunning Blow
Flash U (HT) w/ Armor Piercing, & Mercenary
Dr. Mid-Nite E
Hawkman R (OR)
Total= 998 points
Spectre SR w/ Shellhead & Repulsor Shield
Dr. Fate LE (BIBTB) w/ Stunning Blow & Coordination
Sandman U w/ Coordination
Johnny Thunder LE w/ Coordination
Green Lantern R (OR) w/ Stunning Blow
Flash U (HT) w/ Swingline, Armor Piercing, & Mercenary
Dr. Mid-Nite E
Hawkman R (OR)
Wildcat E
Total= 993 points
Also, you may be able to get ideas on smaller teams from the following thread- started by JSA afficionado Gentlegamer:
Also don't forget to include Seven Soldiers of Victory in your Golden Age considerations. This includes Green Arrow and Speedy!
Yup, it does. I love the Seven Soldiers, but don't plan on playing it until we get a real Crimson Avenger figure. I could substitute Courtney and STRIPE for Syl and Pat, but there's no way I could put the new Avenger on the Seven Soldiers in place of Lee Travis. Same goes for the new "Shining Knight..."

You're thinking Grant Morrison's so-called "Seven Soldiers of Victory," not the real, Golden Age team.

I would love to do a 70's-era Earth-Two JSA... but we need an E-2 Robin and Huntress, not to mention the original Star-Spangled Kid. And Power Girl just needs a good remake in general. I really do want to play a classic, pre-Crisis JSA. Too bad E-2 Supes is one of the elusive, ubiquitously coveted chase figures. Of course, I'd also love to do a "Thy Kingdom Come" team, but it's the same story with the KC Superman...not to mention, we'd need about twenty more figures, and a 5000 point game. You could even use Galactus for Gog. I'd love to play Infinity, Inc, too, but far too many figures are missing for that to really work. Sigh... So many ideas...

Actually, the only time I haven't played Dr. Mid-Nite with the JSA is on a 300 point team. Look again at my first list, that's the team I've been playing. He was left off the second list more as an oversight than anything else. I'd change it up to include him.

I've only ever played him once with the JSA, and twice on "cosmic" type teams. I'd rather play Atom-Smasher more often, but he's too much of a bloody target.

I always use the Experienced version. His dial just seems much more usable than the Vet, and not only because of the regen.

I just checked the units section, I have most of the All-Star Squadron keyword pieces; every piece with the keyword comes to 618 points, which would work for a 600 pt game at my venue under most circumstances. All-Star Squadron is in my top five of favorite comic series of all time. I still wish they'd make a Golden Age Johnny Quick, Liberty Bell, Tarantula and Guardian. Not to mention some of the Young All-Stars, like Iron Monro and Dan the Dyna-Mite. :-)

Lately it's been more 600-ish point games for me. I'm averaging about three six-hundred point games, three three-hundred point games, and one one-thousand point game a week. Give or take.
Not counting the Alpha games I play with my 62 year old mother who loves Batman. :-)

I have been screaming for some Young All-Stars. Especially Munro. Hopefully we will eventually see one or two.
But first I want to see some more of the modern era and golden age JSAs. Leading off with Power Girl's remake and then followed closely by Citizen Steel and Cyclone.
Not exactly Golden Age, but for modern JSA also don't forget to include Captain Marvel, KC Superman (the original Unleashed version is still a hoss), and Magog in consideration.

Of them all, Iron Munro would be the most likely to be done, I think. Perhaps even a young and "old" version, seeing as how he's shown up in Damage and, more recently, in Manhunter.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. And, for the love of Paul Levitz, give us Thom Kallor/Starman, and Wildcat, "Jr." And then Amazing Man (preferably, both "Golden Age" and current versions).
If you want a Citizen Steel in the meantime, try this mod idea on for size. Piledriver's body with Ray's head, all repainted of course, on the dial for MU Colossus (the one with the Sentinel head). I think that's about as close as I can come to a representation of the Citizen Steel character.

Also try picking maps that with small areas that you can control and limit your opponents access to your team. On indoor maps like the prison, its harder to position to get line of site to outwit. Its also a 2 way streak meaning that you also will not be able to get line of sight for prob rolls.
