Morrison's Starro story didn't claim to have anything to do with Lovecraft - no mention of any mythos related items, but a second (third, maybe?) reading, years after the fact made me realize that the horrific alien intelligence reminded me of Lovecraft-style tales. I went over the comic yet again, asking myself could this have been Morrison's take on how the JLA would deal with Lovecraft monsters. As I read, the theory worked. It fit so perfectly, and knowing Morrison's affection and familiarity with Lovecraft, I have since been convinced that this was an intentional tribute.
He simply reimagined Starro as if he were a Cthulhu-style evil space-god. It worked perfectly.
Abnett & Lanning are going for a more straight-forward, name-dropping take on the same idea. I'm a little bit wary of this, actually. Normally, I love everything Abnett & Lanning do in these comics, but this one feels a bit hollow so far. We'll see, I guess.
For those of you not reading Guardians (And why the slang are you not!?), we got yet another answer to what's going on in the Cthuluverse this week, and needless to say, it's a really interesting one that hints back to an issue of GotG from right before War of Kings kicked off. I'm guessing that the 'official' nickname we're being given is something like the "Cancer Verse", because that's how Moonstone described it from talking with the BEST (Black Evil Squishy Thing) in her stomach.
For those who may recall, Malestrom, when Drax and Phyla were in some kind of out of body experience, mentioned that either Life or Death winning would be a bad thing. I wondered how Life winning would be bad, and DnA have answered my question - because the Cthuluverse is a universe where Life has won and Death has lost.
Anyone wonder if that's our Quasar or their Quasar at the end of Realm of Kings? During the issue they let slip that their Quasar went into the fault just like ours did. Plus, they apparently had the same costume.
It's possible it's our Quasar and he's infected, but it could also be theirs and ours is 'stuck' somewhere.
"Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad,
He's so bad, he mak'a me mad
Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad
He's a real cad, Un-fun Dad"

My opinion: That's our Quasar merged with their Quasar, I beiieve......... a plot device to get him a "human" body again (although personally I loved the idea of him being a Quantum Wraith (especially Hulking out and the like)
POSSIBLE SPOILERS********
In the Fault...in fact we saw "a" Quasar facing off, kind of, against the Imperial Guard in the Realm of Kings Imperial Guard #3.
As to which one though.. who knows? Hope I'm right....
Ah I almost forgot about Shuma(loved him in the old Marvel Vs Capcom) .Wouldnt put him to be the big bad that is reintoroduced in this story. Although personally I woudl love it if this is the way to finally bring in Rune/Lord Pumpkin into Marvel Proper. And also want a Wraith return

Marvel tried delving into that territory in the Seventies with Dr. Strange. Shuma Gorath and Sise-Neg were thinly disguised Cthulian characters as are Set and Chthon frrom earlier stories.
Now that the Lovecraft stuff is public domain I say go for it. I just wish somebody who cares were guiding it and not Quesada.

Well I don't feel that Life winning or anything to do with balance of natural forces has anything to do with Lovecraft. That said I can't wait for my fave quotes to start popping up. The most obviuos baring the whole Life wins scenario being' "That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange Aeons even death may die." My personal fave is something something... "and things have learned to walk that aught to crawl."
I think its more the nature/appearance of the being rather than any Lovecraftian ideals (well at least until we see giant albino killer penguins)
They are like the Dark Gods of Lovecraft which admittedly draw on ancient myths of dark beings themselves who have to posses a mortal to gain a threshold on the mortal plane

Well they mentioned Leng and Ms. Marvel likes to curse in Old One and the title The Stars are Wrong is just one word off of what cultists are waiting for. But yes Michigan you are probably right. Like when they need to convey something is Beyond imagination or too horrible to contomplate they will throw in a Lovecraftian phrase. Arkham Asylum is a perfect example.
Just to mention it: Realm of Kings: Imperial Guard #3 is out this week. And it promises to be a bit of an eye opener.
And I know nothing of Cthulu and Lovecraft. Haven't EVER read one of his stories. Probably don't want to as horror was never a true medium for my liking. But if that's what it takes for the Marvel Cosmic U. to get noticed....then so be it.

Creepy.
Another good example(s) of Life winning = Bad are the lands of Juibblex and Zuggtmoy in the D&D universe.
"Nobody important? That's amazing. You know, in 900 years of traveling time and space I've never met someone who wasn't important."
