I have a buddy who put together an Intelligencia team a few weeks ago. It was pretty killer. Glad somebody else has seen the power of this combination, from the other side of the table. Me? I got my ### whipped.
I can't call them an underdog team though. When you see them across the table you know exactly what you're in for.
To be fair, I didn't see the power of the combo, I saw the HOLY CARP LEADER AND MODOK AND DOOM AND MONKEYS ON THE SAME TEAM I LOVE THAT. I fully expected to get my butt kicked by HSS mokers, which made it post-worthy that I actually won my three games.
Of course, I lost the tournament prize to another guy who went 3-0 who ran THREE BRILLIANT TACTICIANS on his Illuminati team. I'm glad I didn't have to play that particular nightmare of a team.
Okay, so the title's a bit misleading. I played The Intelligentsia in a 1000 point game this weekend and went 3-0.
Mystic Doom
MODOK
The Leader
Mad Thinker
E Awesome Android
Red Ghost
Super Apes Igor, Mikhlo, Peotor
Wizard
I expected this team to tank, but I squeaked out a win against the Avengers (MODOK lit up Thor and KOed him like a big-headed lovebug) and an even squeakier win against an E-2 Supes team that had Saboteur equipped to Power Girl to neuter my Mystic defense. But I got ballsy, double TKed MODOK out to light up E-2 while he was diddling around with Mjolnir. Then Doom got in a shot on him as well, and then I plinked him down enough for Peotor to score the killshot. Then in round 3 I'm facing KC Supes, and once again MODOK lights him up, then Awesome Android clobbers him with a heavy object, and Red Ghost himself scores the killshot on him to herald the sweep of the whole opposing side - Doom lit up Magog something fierce.
INTELLIGENTSIA. I swear, if this Fall of the Hulks stuff somehow works the Bi-Beast onto this team, IT WILL BE THE GREATEST TEAM EVER MADE.

Yeah, the Illuminati is good for that. We have an Intelligencia keyword house ruled on the clix cave.
I cleared it with the judge first days in advance, who is big on giving characters the keywords they canonically SHOULD have. I got 4 theme probs, plus Leader and Mad Thinker. It didn't come into play nearly as much as I thought it would, though. The second game, I burned through almost all of my theme probs trying to land a hit on E-2 and wound up failing. I rolled fairly well - most of the times I made sure to set up LOS on prob, I didn't need it. Which is extremely rare for me, as I'm notorious for rolling like carp. Another of our regulars was incredulous that I went 3-0, because I never do.
Here's my 800-point Intellegentsia team that I've currently been wrecking faces with:

If I end up in a 1,000-pt match, the Starter/Classics Dr. Doom is a shoo-in. If they ever make an Egghead... I'll have to completely go back to the drawing-board, I guess. Lulz.
"Fall of the Hulks: Alpha" is a great read, even if you - like me - don't care about Red Hulk or any of the surrounding Loebian nonsense. It's just a fun comic about what the heck the super-villains have all been doing while the heroes were off fighting each other. I <3 Jeff Parker. If I could afford duplicates of all these figures, I'd mod them into their little scuba-suits, too!!!
Much respect for running the Intelligencia. I would have also house ruled that it was a theme team. Taking down both chase Superman isn't always easy, but isn't there a rule that you can't double TK a figure?

Jackstar mentioned that team. I was wondering how it lost. Now I know: it didn't.
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope the cash/credit made it feel a little better.
I'll see you next week. I'm making an effort to try out my superawesome10101010101newfangledpiece I just got in the mail.
And after that.... I'm going to throw down my "Gauntlet" at you.

The rule is, they can't be given a non-free action after being TK'd twice (paraphrased).
WOW! As if you needed any more of my respect, TB! That's got to be one of the coolest teams I've ever heard of. I loved that Intelligencia one-shot. Jeff Parker has got to be my new favorite writer at Marvel. If you haven't been reading Agents of Atlas (and Incredible Hercules, R.I.P.), you really ought to.
I especially loved how the Leader just "took it" when Doom betrayed them. All of the other guys had too much ego and fought back, but the Leader knew he was doomed.
Such a great underdog tale, really. I guess all that wildcard Mystics T.A. really works in your favor on a team like that!

You can bet I would have had Mental Shields all over the place if I had room for it, but I only had 11 points left, and there was no way I was going to not have Mystic Doom (I swapped the sculpt for a regular Doom, because I hate the meatsack but I like a magic-geared Doom). I probably could have made a lot better use of the Hydra TA than I did, but MODOK was usually my first gun out there, and it was good to have another TA to copy. I was just impressed MODOK actually performed well for me for once - he usually whiffs because I love him so and he must hurt me. I loved that he aced Thor pretty much on his own.
And yeah, I've despised Red Hulk with a passion and dropped the Loeb book, but it's amazing how much teaming up Leader with MODOK will do to get me back into the Hulk fold. I love Agents of Atlas, but for some reason I can't get into Herc. I think I just have too strong a distaste for Amadeus Cho.

The cash helped, as well as Jan offering to trade his spare prize for some fig he needs later. I'd like to have Thor The Reigning, I think.
Did you just shell out cash for a Nekron or something? And by Gauntlet, do you have some Spider-Villain action to throw at me?
Also, holy ####, Web of Spider-Man! WILL THEY REMAKE MYSTERIO WITH SPECIAL POWERS? DARE WE DREAM? And if so, will the sculpt suck so much that he'll need to be replaced with the awesome original sculpt? I'm cool with that - I've got LOTS of spare Mysterios.
