Since I don't plan on reading this tripe, but don't want to be completely lost when someone else is talking about it, who or what is this "Entity"? Does it look like a long brown smear left by a member of the DC writing staff?

It looks exactly like that except all in white.
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
The Entity is the embodiment of life like Ion is to willpower and Parallax is to fear. The truth, which the Guardians have tried to hid for millenia, is that life originated on Earth when the Entity first entered our universe. They've hidden it here ever since to protect it.

You have chosen...wisely
This might have been the dumbest thing I've ever read.
And I read Flash:Rebirth just so I could make fun of it on the internet.
It read a lot like an episode of Dragon Ball or Naruto.
First, the heroes get their asses beat by the big bad. Then, the hero digs down deep and unleashes a new technique, which is the only thing that can beat the big bad, and transforms into a new form, which conveniently requires new action figures. Through their transformation into Hyper Mega Lantern Chakra Zord, they can now win easily.
It also might have been the laziest mass resurrection ever seen in comics.
There was a Robocop III you know (so don't be racist)
Is Vibe back? Did Vibe come back? Please tell me yes!

As many others pointed out, not everyone who is dead is back. Elongated Man fans, as well as fans of Tempest, might not be too happy about them not returning. However, I think their choices on who to bring back (Arthur, Hawk, etc.) are great. I really do hope they stick to this whole "dead means dead" idea in DC now. One of the major flaws of comics, IMO, is that monumental events don't wind up being all that monumental because of constant retcons/bringing people back/etc.
I, for one, loved the series.
Quick question: I know next to nothing about Max Lord. How was he able to back off Guy? Does he have mental powers?

Yes, when the Dominators detonated the Gene-Bomb waaaaaayyy back during the conclusion of the Invasion! storyline, it triggered a latent metagene ability in Max.
He has the ability to push people's minds in a direction of his choosing. Less powerful than full-on telepathy, but more powerful than, I dunno, the power of persuasion.
Hope this helps.

Huh. I liked it, and I hate Dragon Ball Z. (I like Naruto, though, so...varying mileage and all that.)

In a genre full of sweeping cosmic resets? I beg to differ on this point.
There's definitely some metaphor stuff going on here, though. Looking at the spread from left to right:
Professor Zoom. Killed in the mid-80's, his departure sorta led to the end Barry Allen as Flash in Crisis of Infinite Earths, one of the first big universe-wide comics events. Maxwell Lord. Retconned into an archvillain, his demise was the spark for Infinite Crisis, sequel to aforementioned DCU event. Hawk. Sacrificial lamb when plans for the Armageddon 2001 event went awry. Jade. The girl who "had" to senselessly die to make us care about Thanagar-Rann War and Infinite Crisis events. Captain Boomerang and Firestorm. The guys who "had" to die to make us care about Identity Crisis after the initial murder...and, in the long run, seemed especially senseless. Martian Manhunter. Disfigured beyond recognition by the One Year Later event and essentially mercy-killed to make us care about the Final Crisis event. Aquaman. Disfigured beyond recognition by the One Year Later event and essentially mercy-killed to...um...I guess make room for his failed replacement? I don't know anymore, and I actually read the title at the time. Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Senselessly killed at the start of Blackest Night to make us care about this event. But at least it's obvious there was a plan all along. Deadman. Intriguing twist that's plainly plot-driven more than metaphorical. Osiris. Senselessly killed for shock value during the 52 event.
Essentially, it's a mostly a bunch of characters who never should've been axed.
God is smarter than we are....

Heroclix is a strategy game with comic book characters where you can shoot sheep guns and quip with Spider-man and Deadpool. It is played by some of the nicest, most giving people on the planet. That is why I play Heroclix.

No, I guess Vibe didn't figure prominently in Johns' youth.
Or, they didn't feel the need to show us everyone Brightest Day could have some stories. Why bother reading comics you obviously hate? You the money on a good shrink.

####ity Ding Dong...so Everyone Who was dead is now a live.
The Entity is DC's Big ### Restart Button.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Anyone Pumped to See Max back?
I'm mainly excited for Digger's Return.
NOT EVERYONE made it back.
Blue Beetle (Ted)
Ralph Dibny
Sue Dibny
Aquaman and Mera's son Arthur
Katma Tui
Alex (Kyle's first GF)
Earth 2 Superman
Earth 2 Lois
Alex Luthor
A whole load of Justice League and Batman Villains
It also looks like a few who were killed and turned to Black Lanterns did not return either (or were not shown to return by the end of the story):
Tempest
Dolphin
Captain Boomerang Junior
The new Hawk
I actually liked what they did. Bringing these characters back and starting from square one.
I am really curious about Brightest Day AND that White Lantern.....
