You can win with World's Finest. They're like Skrull Ms. Marvel in a way, being that if your opponent's team isn't set up to deal with Stealth/Hypersonic/Willpower you can go whole games without ever being attacked. With World's Finest you just have to jump through a lot more hoops to get it to work.
I used them myself before I sold them to moderate success. I don't think I ever lost a casual game with them and I don't think I ever won a tournament game with them.

If I am going to put out the money to buy a brick in this economy I wanna have some bang for my buck. If you get a brick you are not guaranteed to get something with that WOW playability factor and I think that a BIBTB fig should give you that assurance. The figure can be pretty all it wants to be but if it's not worth playing I have enough nick knacks catching dust in my apt. From a collectors point of view yes its cool to have for looks and if your a completest but if I wanna collect I'd rather pay just for that figure than a whole brick. Sorry if thats harsh but I like to spend my money wisely.

I appreciate something that would not normally fit in a booster. Ideally the larger base would be functional as well as a trophy piece - I'd be all for a 2x2 with all four Fantasic Four, a ruler-style character with personal guards, or perhaps a 2x2 with a Lantern character and energy constructs.

I have Personally 1st Click Vs 1st Click beaten worlds finest with AA Wonder Woman.
I have also seen WF used in alot of those Crisis point escaltion events (serious Tourneys) and Never seen it come out on top.
However that said, it is probably the most VIABLE Trophy, but its hardly competitive. It gets DESTROYED by comparable point figs
compare the 400 Point SCAM to WF's its no contest.
Single or Peanut base figures for me. Spidey could have been easily been a normal figure with almost the same sculpt, just cut off those extra buildings. Only include the one that his leg was attached to and you would have had a highly artistic piece and one that would be playable.
If they do the larger base figures, I would then like the exclusives to be truely worthy of them. I actually did not like WF because it look dumb to have two figures on such a large base. Yes, I know they needed the extra clicks, but it just did not work visually.
I would like them to do Sentinel size Brick figures (yes they would have to raise the price to $20-25 per brick), but it would be awesome. Just think we could get more Sentinels, maybe a Galactus at that size, Terminus, ect. I really don't think we need colossals either, they shouldn't produce anything in this game that would not fit on a sentinel sized base. It just doesn't work.
I'm with those that have said that torphy-sized figures need not be unplayable. This thread creates a false dichotomy; it's possible for the brick fig to be both, and that's what I want.
I don't think that Brick Spidey's terribly unplayable, but I do wish that they'd done more with that much dial space.

WKs doesnt seem to agree, they always give us one or the other
I prefer the smaller base figures. I don't own any of the 2x2 brick figures. I tried to get world's finest and the Clown Prince, but the circumstances behind the ordering of them left me with nothing. On the other hand, I have gotten every single based figure I have ever ordered from the Buy it by the Brick program.
I don't know why that is, but it creates an instant bias for me.
I prefer playable to being a trophy but there really isn't a reason that the Bibtb fig can't be both. So far they just haven't gotten the design right.

The other thing about World's Finest is that so long as it's on its last click, there's a very good chance that the figure will win even if it could only KO one of an opponent's figures. This is what happened to me while facing the figure - I trashed the heck out of it, but because it was still up, I hadn't actually earned any points. This is a side-benefit to a figure like World's Finest or Thor's Chariot - it's all or nothing in a 500 point game. So long as the figure can beat the clock, it can rack up a few wins in a tournament.
Anyway, my thoughts on the topic at hand:
Heroclix is a game first. I have no problem with display pieces, but those figures also need to be designed as play pieces. The extra large dial should be taken advantage of in some way. It shouldn't be hard to design a display piece with play in mind. There's no reason that a figure can't be both.
I'm in Providence! I've been out of the hobby, but I'm looking for Saturday gaming. Send me a PM if you know the down-low!
Why can't we have both? A large display piece that is fun to play
I honestly don't think the Spider-Man is horrible. I do wish they had had more fun with the huge dial, but it still looks like fun times. I look forward to using it
